I dropped into Tommy-O-s fine Hawaiian restaurant located on a sunny N.E. corner of Southwest Washington and 8th Streets in Vancouver, Washington, this past Friday, July 3rd.
What a most pleasant surprise! They featured a great solo vocalist by the name of Roland Van Espe. He played rythmn guitar accompaniment with a lot of UP-TOWN chords, semi-classical/jazz. He had a PA set and yet from a distance of less than 12 feet, we were able to converse at our table without being blasted out of the establishment, as is all too often the case with so many country bands.
He performed a lot traditional Hawaiian tunes that were melted in with a number of pop tunes and older
nostalgic standard hits from the past.
No cover charge and the food is superb!
If you truly enjoy songs from old Hawaii, you won't want to miss this fine performer. No orchestra, just a solo act, but a whole lot of fabulous music in a very intimate setting. A very personable fellow. |

Lead me astray Ray? I don't need a leader to go there! Wish we had a place like that in Cleveland! Here you get a guy with a boombox doin' rap! |

Well, the last time I was in Vancouver, Washington, was 1985, driving up to Canada. It might be a while before I get to check this fellow out. |
