Sorry, but I don't know who that is, and the information given doesn't give much of a clue. The user who posted the video almost certainly knows the performer, and would probably be happy to tell.

I've sent a message to the poster asking for more information.

Following some other vidieos it looks like that is A.J. Ghent. I haven't heard of him, but sure he knows his way around that 8 string.

Hi--I don't understand all the confusion. The musicians' names are listed on the YouTube page.

Anyhow, it is not AJ Ghent. Here's a shot of AJ at the 2008 Sacred Steel Convention in Ft. Pierce. He was pretty much doing a Robert Randolph-style act there--even some of RR's material. If you like that style, AJ is very, very good at it.

His father, Aubrey Ghent, uses Dobro tuning, usually in A, but the pitch may vary from G to B-flat. Aubrey's father, Henry Nelson, tuned up to B flat, using G-gauge strings. He liked a lot of tension on the strings!

Bob,
What I saw on that YouTube link was this:
Quote:
This was a big surprise young bro aj gave this performance at HGA in miami for MOF ah jesus watch how God moved AJ on steel Trimaine on lead Frank on bass and Perry on set

The poster's YouTube page says this:
Quote:
This is Churchwreckers - Jr Bryant (Keyboard& Organ), Donald Scott (Keyboard & Organ), John Smith (Drums, Keyboard, Organ & Guitar ) and Byron Johnson (Guitar & Pedal Steel Guitar)

It appears as if the people listed as members of the Churchwreckers are not those appearing in this particular video. I still haven't heard back from the YouTube poster, so until then, we'll just have to keep enjoying the music.

Hi,

I apologize. I was commenting on the wrong video. That is indeed AJ Ghent sporting the Afro. The Church Wreckers personnel are as listed in Brad's quote of the poster's page. That's Byron Johnson backing AJ on guitar and playing steel in some of the other videos. It is quite common for sacred steelers to trade off on drums, bass, guitar and steel.

I'm not sure what tuning AJ is using here, but it is very likely Dobro (1-3-5-1-3-5) tuning, possibly with a tonic added on top. Don't assume he is playing 8 strings unless you can see them. His grandfather, Henry Nelson, played a Fender DeLuxe 8 fitted with only six strings. I've seen 10-string pedal steels strung with only six strings and the pedals either removed or just not used.

Best,

Bob
