Has anybody tried one of these amps for steel? I just picked up a '73 for cheap today, and tried it with the 2 12's in my Twin as well as the 15" in my Session 400. Sounds great with both speaker configurations. The headroom is clean all the way, more so than my '71 Twin. Of course, it has no reverb, but that's no big deal when using a DD3 or a 'verb pedal.

It came with JJ's and some RCA's. The amp has been recently serviced (re-capped, etc.) and is quiet as a mouse.

Any other SF Bassman fans around here?

Hey Chris,
I have a '75 bassman 10,this is a combo with 4 10's.It is the same power amp as yours. This is a great amp for 6 string guitar and I did use it a little for steel. It sounded ok and had plenty of head room, but I really found it best suited for 6 string. Also these things are loud!!
I finally bought a nv112,and the peavey sounds much better ,to my ears, than the bassman.I suppose it might sound much different through a single 15.
Still an awsome amp,and very affordable.

Yes, Jim, the 112 seems to be able to more readily deliver a standard pedal steel tone. However, I find that with the right tweaking, a tube amp (especially a high-powered SF Fender) will deliver a sweetness that solid state amps cannot. There's this presence that happens when a Fender is dialed in and cooking on a meaty volume. My 112 did not get sweeter as it got louder; my Twin and this Bassman does, which is nice when you're dealing with VP headroom.

The 4-10 configuration is my least favourite for steel. I bet a 15 would be sweeter for sure.

I just got a Bassman 100 so I thought I'd revive this thread. I found one that is just about mint. It came with a Vibro-King 2x12 cabinet. Anyone else using one of these? I haven't had a chance to try it with a band yet but it sounds great here at home.

Isaac, I actually bought one off of Craigs' list after reading on the Forum about Chris' experience with one last November. Mine is a '73. I think it's a fantastic amp for steel, and, in my view, they are terrific value for the money. Only downside is it's a bit heavy, but what a lovely sound. I use mine either with a 2x12 cabinet with Peavey 1203-8's, or a single 1x15 with a Peavey 1503-4. Congrats.

A couple of years ago I bought a newer, tilt-back, solid-statem, single 10" (?) Bassman 100 to play bass through and not only is it a tight, punchy little bass rig but it sounds fabulous with an RV3 as a PSG amp, small, clean, loud and versatile

Dave that's a completely different amp with the same name.
