I had about 28 text messages about 'micheal jackson' on his last day within 1 hour.
Not one 'Jack the lad' sent me a text message about 'Vern Gosdin' when we lost our hero.
Now my best freind has buried himself in a room to watch micheals funeral on NBC
Where was 'Vern's' Funeral, he was an AMERICAN ICON!

I did not even hear about 'Vern's' passing for quite some time. No text message or emails??

Who was his recording steel player anyhow?????

Country is an 'American idea'
So lets have some respect and acknowlegement for our true 'Country music' hero's National T.V

Larry, we had a pretty good-sized thread honoring Vern when he passed away in April:

Larry,it's simple, don't know how old you are,I'm old enough to remember when the MAJORITY of the citizens of our great nation [not all] but MOST had real morals, believe in self sufficiency, raised their kids to show respect for others,To show respect for the hundreds of thousands of Americans that gave their lives for this country[and other countries as well]In the last fifty years have seen the pendulum swing all the way in the opposite direction. These people are in the MINORITY now,This past week there has been too many of our brave troops that have lost their lives for their country,But WHAT have you seen on the [so-called] news networks around the clock ? A worship frenzy over a drugged out entertainer, will this sick society sink lower ? That's a great probability. DYK?BC.

It's all about that american dream, when you have money and good connections you're consider more important than the other guy who gave his life in the line of duty, and the media is making more money covering an event like this than some other not so important news.

It's all about the money and who you know and who you bl#w. Sad

you can even buy your freedom in the US if you have the money Oh Well

Charlie, you know what I think?

Maybe it's our generation is the one that's full of crap. Our generation is the one that owns all of the so-called "media." We had an inner city/works-with-youth pastor from Chicago speak at our church a couple years ago, and he was pointing out that many of the kids today seem to care a lot about each other, compared to a lot of the people I grew up with in the 60's and the 70's, and I can see that quality in my own kids and their friends, ages 22,20, and 19. I'm holding high hopes for the next generation.

I don't know what any of this had to do with a thread about Vern Gosdin, started about 2 1/2 months after he passed away. All I know is that I was aware of his passing the day after it happened.

Michael J. sold 750 million records and was known in vitually every corner of the earth. I don't think it has anything to do with morals or politics or the decay of the American way of life or any such thing. Plain and simple he had enormous popularity and if it had been anyone else with as much popularity who died you would see the same kind of coverage.

I think my biggest issue with the whole Jackson thing is how stupid the "alleged" news organizations look falling all over themselves to cover something--anything about it for the last two weeks. And why on earth was WSIX in Nashville live-streaming the whole circus on their website?
I'm sorry...did I miss Michael Jackson being inducted into the Opry?

Larry,

You're barking up the wrong tree. I'd rather have a penny for every person that is familar with MJ than $100 for every person that is familar with Vern.

Having said that, I agree with your taste. For listening, I wouldn't give "Chisled In Stone" for every song MJ ever did. But in all fairness, Vern has some stuff that I'd just as soon hear MJ as to listen to it.

On "Inside Edition" last night, the reporter said, "The whole world stopped to watch the Michael Jackson Memorial". Well no, I didn't stop and everywhere I went, it was business as usual. The news reported that the expected 700,000 expected outside the Staple Center that couldn't get in was actually only a couple thousand. I recognize Jackson's stardom and influence and give him his due.
Like the first poster, I didn't see much hoopla over
Vern or Ernest Tubb, or Jimmy Martin or Porter Wagoner, or Dan Seals (and on and on). Sometimes our worlds just don't intersect that much.

As much as I love Jimmy Dickens, Ernest Tubb, Porter Wagoner, etc., the only figures in country related music whose popularity was in any way comparable to Michael Jackson's were Elvis and Garth Brooks. I'm sure reaction to Elvis' death would be very comparable had it occurred in today's media soaked and celebrity obsessed world.

I wish steel and what this forum is all about was much more popular. But it certainly is a "bubble" compared to the popularity of MJ. I'm not sure if all of the country hits sold as many records as MJ alone. That said I love most all steel guitar infused music. What gripes me are the people who know nothing about the real truth concerning the negative press MJ got and made sudden judgments about him. How many of you out there have ever had anything written about you in the press that was accurate. According to many very popular stars and a congress woman from Texas attending MJ's memorial MJ gave millions to charity, hospitals and the like. Brook Shields was amazing. Althought I think he made some bad choices which he paid dearly for only he knows what really happened. He was very generous of his money to help other people. Maybe these people with all the negative opinions could sell their house, car, all their jewlery, all their belongings(not their steel though Smile ) and give all the money to a good cause. Then they might come up to probably a very small fraction of the money MJ himself donated to help people all over the world. I would like to see how much that very vocal politician from NY has contributed to this society besides all of his negative comments.

Vern Used Big Jim Vest a lot. And I don't think you do (get it), but hey, Im sure that there are as many people who are pissed off that polka music (not that there is anything wrong with that) is not as popular as MJ, (or Vern) They don't get it either. The facts will speak for themselves.

[Maybe these people with all the negative opinions could sell their house, car, jewlery, and give to a good cause] Is anyone NAIVE enough to believe Mr. Jackson did this. He spent twenty million to stay out of jail,That could have fed quite a few starving children I'm sure,Yes he was asquitted at his trial,so was OJ.[twenty million dollars worth] One question for the spinners that think he was God's gift to the world,How many GROWN men do YOU know that would lock theirself in their bedroom with very YOUNG childern for days at the time. He DID'NT sell his belongings and donate to charity,It's a FACT percentage wise middle class and POOR people give MORE to charity than the super rich. When he would go on these wild shopping sprees[spend millions in one after noon]Why not spend that money on helping millions of kids[that he said he loved so much]that die of starvation and aids every year,I guess a vase or a famous piece of art worth several hundred grand was more important to him. Another thing maybe some can answer that I don't understand the African American community treating him like a God,When he SLAPPED them in the face,he spent millions trying to look white, choose a white woman to have his kids and a white man to father them,Yet millions of them compare him to the great african American HERO,Dr. Martin Luther King, who gave his life for them. DYK?BC.

I don't think seeing someone dangling their kid over a hotel balcony railing on international CNN television is a "sudden judgement". I agree, there is a definite imbalance and bias in the media as concerns morals, ethics, focusing on pathetic self destructive pop figures as somehow they are normal. MJ's funeral coverage was WAY over blown. Vern Gosdin was an historic figure in country music. The fact that the national media did not cover his passing shows real prejudice and bias toward the country music community. Its obvious who their prejudice and hatred is presented against. One soldier who gave their life overseas for this country is far more important than the self destructive passing of a pop star.

Unfortunatly this Michael Jackson Who bought his way out of jail is more news worthy because of his fame. He generates more money fueled by this perverted society of ours that refuses to look at the real "Man in the Mirror " as his song goes! We all know that any common man of the middle class and lower would be behind bars and out of the media where he belongs! Michael would probably still be alive and unable to fuel his drug addictions if he got the conviction he deserved. No simpathy here for Michael
