Don't get me wrong, I love steel guitar, but nobody sounds like Stan Getz on a bossa nova. That tone, that feeling of floating on a wave and his rare ability to place notes anywhere on or around the beat make him unique. If they gave you only record to listen to on a desert isle you could do a lot worse than Getz/Gliberto. If you look into his life story, Stan wasn't a very nice human being but boy could he play the sax!

One of my favorite Jazz guitar players Chuck Loeb, played in Getz's band for a while. He had some great musicians in his group. _________________ Darvin Willhoite

Me too! I have the box set with Jim Hall. He and Getz were very different musicians. I would rather have shared a drink with Desmond than Getz any day but there's no denying Getz's sound. Paul's tone was equally beautiful in its own way and his lines often bordered on genius.
Lester Young, Ben Webster, John Coltrane, Art Pepper ... I could go on and on. Sonny Rollins is one player whom I've never quite gotten. I know I'm supposed to appreciate his genius but he never moved me for some reason. |

Sticking with Getz and shying away from the Desmond trap, I saw a concert on TV one night with Getz and Kenny Baron on piano. I was absolutely blown away with how great Getz sounded at that late part of his career. A genius no doubt.
Now I fall in the Desmond trap....his RCA recordings with Jim Hall are unbelievable in how lyrical they are. |

Since ya'll have highjacked the Getz topic , I'll see your Paul Desmond/ Jim Hall and raise you a Sonny Rollins/Jim Hall. I have a 1963 RCA Rollins reissue LP with Jim Hall called "The Bridge". I think it was originally called "Our Man In Jazz". After 20+ years I still don't get tired of listening to it. _________________ Bill Cunningham

Great thread! Might as well chime in too, hijackings and all...
I love Stan Getz but don't really care much for Gilberto's singing personally; I prefer the purely instrumental stuff as far as his Bossa Nova period goes. I also really liked the "Captain Marvel" album he did with the early Chick Corea band... I'd like to hear some of the Kenny Barron duet stuff, I think there was a double live CD of that out at one point.
The Paul Desmond/Jim Hall records are some of my favorite albums ever, "desert island" stuff for sure. Jim Hall may be my favorite musician on any instrument and I love Sonny Rollins too; I've been really lucky to see each of them play quite a bit over the years, but for some reason I don't care that much for a lot of what they did together. I do like parts of "The Bridge" though and that is the original name of the album; "Our Man in Jazz" is the Rollins album where he plays with the guys from Ornette Coleman's band, same era (early 60s) but very different music (never got into that one much myself...).
To bring it back to the original topic, here's a video that's circulated quite a bit with Getz/Gilberto (and a very young Gary Burton on vibes...).

I love all the Bossa stuf - even the vocals though Joao sings warmly and in tune and Astrud often sings flat. |
