I bought a Sho~Bud LDG 12 string serial # 11060. Problem is the previous owner apparently decided that putting a coat of varnish on the guitar was a good idea, didn't even take the rear pad off first. I am currently removing the old finish and I would like to restore it to the factory look, problem is I'm not sure how to match the green dye. Does anyone have a source for this dye or maybe a part number for a commercial product. I seen the dye on the Guitar Reranch site but there are no color chips,so I am not sure of the shade. Does anyone have any thoughts on this, or, any other product?
Thanks,
Herman |

Herman, I am using a blue dye from Re-ranch on a LDG and it is working quite well. I think you could get a good match with their green dye. You could start with a weaker mix and add to it until you reach the shade you want. You might also check the Stewart-McDonald site as they have dye and stain.

AJ Nelson who did the original finishes at the Sho~bud factory is still doing some for Jeff Surratt who builds the Show~Pro guitar. I'd get a hold of Jeff and see if AJ would refinish it. Jeff also has parts and works on Buds....

Thanks guy's. Stewart MacDonald is right in my back yard so I may try their dye, plus, they sell the lacquer in quarts rather than spray cans.Since I have all the spray equipment it will be a little cheaper and I think a much better finish.
Would love to have the job professionally done but it's just not in the budget. I'll just take my time, practice on some scrap wood and I think I'll end up with a good finish. |

Herman,
Here's what A.J. Nelson did to my green cab about two years ago with a blue dye. This is a '76-77 timeframe model. Good luck with your refinish...Carl

Carl,
That's a beautiful guitar. I suppose I could live with another color besides green but in 1981 I bought a brand new LDG from Sonny Curtis and then when the steel guitar fell out of vogue in country music, like a fool, I sold it. Been kickin myself ever since, so I suppose this original color restore is a way to make amends with myself. |

You're welcome Herman and I hear you on staying with the original color. If I had seen my guitar with the brand new, original green, I would have probably would have stayed with green as well. Again, good luck and will be standing by for pics for your NEW LDG. Carl |

Not finished yet but I was so happy with the way it turned out I just had to share it. Green dye from StewMac and nitro lacquer. Such a high gloss it's hard to photograph. Thanks for all the input.

You're not gonna ruin that shiny laquered neck with a fretboard, are ya? _________________ James Collett |

There's a new thought; a fretless steel. I got a feeling that could be challenging. |
