I recently bought an old Yamaha G 100 112 amp (which was made from 1978 till 1982). The amp has some problems and needs to be cleaned and generally restored. The pots are VERY dirty and need to be cleaned, and it tends to distort, which could be from the pots or it might need a new speaker.

But I play through it, my volume pedal is scratchy, like the pot needs to be replaced. But when I play through any of my other amps, the volume pedal is clean.

How can this be? Have any of you ever heard of a volume pedal scratching on one amp and not on another?

Mike, don't you think it might be the AMP and not the pedal, why not try another pedal and see if it still does the same thing. DYK?BC.

Mike, I have a similar situation. I have a brand new Dunlop pot (from Tom Bradshaw) in my Goodrich Model 120 pedal. If I plug into the #1 input of my Evans amp, I get a scratchy noise. I thought I had received a bad pot, so Tom sent me another one. The same thing happened with the 2nd pot. I tried plugging into my Fender Steel King and no noise. Same with another amp of mine. No noise. Next I tried plugging into the #2 input of the Evans and there is no scratchy noise. I only get the scratchy noise on the #1 input of the Evans.

I've seen several amps with this problem over the years. What usually happens is that a bad cap leaks DC power on to the (input) signal line. This additional voltage (normally higher than the music signal) causes tiny arcs within the pot, and they're amplified along with your signal. This condition has also been known to ruin pots in short order, so get the amp checked out ASAP.

What Donny said! DC leakage will cause the scratchy problem.

I'm not going to play through the amp till I get it serviced and restored. Hopefully that will solve this problem.

BTW it's a killer amp. It's a little similar to the Peavey Nashville 112. It doesn't have all the added features, but it puts put 100 watts, and has a built in parametric EQ in addition to the regular tone controls.

Unfortunately it's very heavy, and I might not keep it because of the weight.

You're lucky that your wife doesn't share that sentiment, Mike. Winking Laughing

The Yamaha G100 is reportedly an excellent guitar amp. I have read that it was deisgned by Mike Soldano who now makes excellent amplifiers under his own brand name. so um...nice score. Smile

Soldano is know for his high gain amps ...maybe the distortion your hearing is a "feature" Laughing
