Willies Place is "OK" but not all the time , there is some pretty good music on that channel.

I have turned the dial up 1 and am pretty much listening to Bluegrass all the time now, not every song mind you as I still can't take much of the early style and voices but I am clearly being influenced by the new Bluegrass bands, I just roll the volume back on the songs that I don't like. These bands are influenced by the early players and I am influenced by them so this is good ! So I get the early influence by default. The first thing that captures my attention is how "in tune" these bands are.

Cadillac Sky
Balsam Range
Blue Highway
Ralph Stanley II
Alecia Nugent
Melonie Cannon
Clair Lynch
Blue Moon Rising
Bryan Sutton
Steel Drivers

etc

There is some really good Country music happening right there. I jam with the Dobro over these tracks all the time, and yes, even the Steel, but you better glue your picks on. I also subscribe to Rhapsody ( $10/month) and I have several play lists that I listen to all the time, like right now in fact !

Right on, Tony. This music is the new repository of great songwriting and masterful picking. However, I
warn you, You'll soon get hooked on the old stuff, too. Monroe and the Stanleys are cool in a different
way. The raw vocals are the charm and it'll find its
way to you!

Clyde, I know you are right, and I do listen to a good deal of it but there are a few that I still need to "grow " into. I know, I'm late to the table !

Maybe next time I come up to Raleigh I'll look you up and come visit you playing out somewhere, I come to Raleigh several times each month on business.

Frank,

I played fiddle for Jimmy his last couple of years on the road. We only did about 10-15 shows a year, but he could always have the crowd eating out of his hand. He was one of the icons of bluegrass music. I was lucky to have worked for Jimmy, Bill Monroe, and Del McCoury. I consider that I worked with the best. The direction bluegrass has taken in the last few years doesn't interest me too much. One of the few that I still care about hearing is Larry Sparks.

Willie's Place took a turn for the worse when they watered it down after the Siris merger and then they made it even worse by adding the Bill Mack talk show.

And what's up with Bill playing The Mills Brothers when he stops talking long enough to play some music? That shore ain't country! Why aren't all the old guys on this board that complain about "what's not country" not getting down on BM?

BTW, when I was a kid in the '70's here in Georgia I used to listen to WBAP late at night so I could hear BM play some Price and Wills.

Bill,

Sorry to let you down. I must be slipping. Yeah, Willie's place is not what it used to be. With over 100 channels on XM, you'd think they could let just one be country music. Bill Mack is a good guy, but he should be on one of the talk radio channels. I hate to hear two people on the radio talking to one another.

Besides that, they've changed the play list to include a lot of junky country too.

I used to listen to Charlie Douglas on WWL out of New Orleans. That was real DJing.

All the good times are past and gone,
All the good times are oe'r,
All the good times are past and gone,
Little darling don't you weep no more.

Bill Monroe song written by Charlie Monroe

The thing I most hate about the Bill Mack show is that it is mostly people calling in to tell him how great his show is. He plays very little music; instead he just plays phone calls of people telling him what great music he plays. I took a twenty-minute drive to Hugo the other day, and the first song ended about the time I got in the car, and the next one started a couple of minutes before I got where I was going. I normally wouldn't have stayed tuned in that long, but I actually wanted to time the blabbing, and it was fifteen minutes between songs. I can get less useless talk than this on free am radio! Dallas Wayne usually plays good music in the late afternoons, but I despise the useless conversation with Carl from Carl's Corner TX. WHAT THE HECK DO I CARE WHAT THEY'RE HAVING AT THE TRUCK STOP CAFE? It seems there is nothing perfect in the world. In the old days it was "So-and-So wants cowboy coffee; So-and-So Else wants beer." JASON STILLWELL WANTS MORE MUSIC.

I think I'll quit this rant and rant to the folks who take my money. Oh Well
