Specifically, I'd like to see how some of you are using effects pedals with a pedal steel set up. I want to add 3 or 4 in my chain to expand tonal options but I hate them being on the ground as they are in the way, cumbersome to set up, and impossible to add any real time expression to as I can't reach the knobs/bypass in a timely manner while playing.

I thought about recasing them into one unit but thats just too much labor. My latest thought is to make a type of U-- shaped shelf that they can sit on. This shelf would attach to the front apron of the guitar closest to the pickup end end of the guitar. A thumbwheel screw would secure it firmly to guitar body. Everything could be pre-wired except the in and out jack.

I need some other ideas though, maybe I'm missing some easier solutions.

Hey Greg, I have a Walker pac seat which has the extra compartment on the right side. I just open that compartment and set my effects right on the inside of the lid. There's room for three or four of them but I only use an analog delay and a chorus.......JH in Va.

Mine are mostly on a Pedaltrain board - usually on a chair or amp stand next tome; if it's crowded it sits on top of my amp. It's to my right where I can reach over quickly and kick in whatever I need.

Then I have a Distortion+ mounted upside-down above my right knee so I can get some grind whenever I want very quickly...plus my main Fender has two pickups and assorted series/parallel/out of phase wiring and on-off switches for each pickup (It has two) and a volume & tone control.

Its all in what you need I suppose...

Racks are cool for the compact, and tidy factor. However, they stink IMO for real world, real time, on the fly adjustment of a SPECIFIC parameter. Every rack unit I've had was great at storing presets that I could use for each song or even each part of a song. But that approach always failed miserably for me at gigs, when spontaneous things emerge, and when having that discreet knob of a pedal in front of me made the difference of getting what I needed in a split second versus scrolling through a menu trying to locate the delay level for example.

Anyway - this post wasn't supposed to be about what's better, I just wanted to see how people were using their pedals with their steel.

Hi all!

I'm the one who started that earlier thread that Lee so kindly pointed out. I'm only using a few pedals, but am also switching between PSG, lap steel and dobro in my current band. I'm not one to do too much knob twiddling during a set, but didn't like reaching down to the floor to switch effects on and off while playing or between songs, or to switch my abc box to select the instrument du jour. My solution was to build a switcher box that the three instruments and three effects are all controlled by. It's all true bypass, really has cleaned up my signal path tremendously while making switches on the fly (pun only partially intended) a breeze! Just got the box together and will post a pic or two in the next few days.

All the best,

Julian

This is the board i use in a rock band. My gigs are with three 2-3 other bands per night, in bars and clubs, and I need to be on and off the stage quickly..so i wanted somethig i could throw under my guitar and then just pick up and throw back in a suitcase when im done. Its jts a peice of plywood and some velcro in a thriftstore suitacse so total cost maybe $10?
The right half of the board hanging out from under the steel is used for guitar as I need to play both, hence the a/b box also. Only the delay and seymour duncan twin tube distortion are used with the steel.
The Boss TU2 tuner powers the enitre board except for the duncan which requires its own wallwart. These wallwarts are simply velcroed to the board and a long extension chord plugs into front of stage power to reach their upturned prongs.
works for me.
