Not the largest selection, but it includes many tunes I've not been able to locate elsewhere, such as the superb Sea Shells by Santo & Johnny, off their 'Hawaii' LP, and while not the TV show opener I'm still searching for it's still an interesting version of Heavenly Islands by the Hawaii Calls group led by Webley Edwards, w/a few more selected LPs by them to preview.
Other interesting Hawaiian/style LPs with some excellant steel work - Tiny And His Hawaiian Bubbles-Hawaiian Luau Party, which seems to be in an actual live setting and is a real sleeper for this era/style of Hawaiian music.
Kuu Lei by Andy Iona has lots of old tunes by the great steeler.
Chick Floyd's Hula La is another rare masterpiece w/terrific backings.
BTW, IDing the steel players in any of the recordings would be appreciated.
Beware of the many selections with the typical sappy 1960 era background vocals and orchestrations, unless that's your thing, of which you'll then be in Heaven... But some real gems are to be found here, even in some of the otherwise stupid recordings. |

There's also a small gold mine of rare Jimmy Bryant material, including an interview w/Jimmy covering his musical history from the record - Jimmy Spills The Beans-Carey's Country Store. First I've heard Jimmy talk at length.
The uber-scarce LP - Desert Jam, w/guitar greats, Jimmy, Jody Reynolds, and Les Paul dueling it out on some live jazz jams. And dang if we don't get some fine jazz fiddle c/o JB during Rose Room and How High The Moon!
There is at least one probable Speedy find on the last tune of - Laughing Guitar/Crying Guitar, The Heart Of A Clown, which has Speedy West's volume swells throughout. This LP also has Jimmy on accoustic guitar.
The Frettin Fingers box set is here, and includes a killer early 60s instro that shows a different side of Jimmy, Long Walk Home. One of those 'why wasn't this a hit?' tunes that you probably never heard but quickly recognize as a sleeping classic.
Kenny Burrell fans may dig Kai Winding's - More LP, which also has some interesting steel work included. |

You're right, Ron. It is very hard to find good steel anymore but I still have some favorites in Hawaii but the problem is,- I can't find them making too many CDs lately.
On another subject, I did find my long, long expandable list of Arthur Lyman's LPs and CDs that I presented to him many years ago. Sadly, he never had a chance to play them. RIP, Atta.
I'll send you the list just as I gave it to him. Is your address still the same?

I Emailed you, Wally. Thanx!
Wally mentions a list...
Arthur Lyman had a typical line he'd pass to anyone interested in requests, "next time bring a list!".
Being the big fan he is of the great vibesman, Wally made sure Atta got THE list on his return to Honolulu, handing him a long list that unfurled across the entire dinning room floor. Classic! Artur's face must have been priceless. Where's that picture?! |

A bunch of great Hawaiian music w/steel has been added recently, mostly in the 'roots' section. |
