Picked up a NV 400 today. It has chrome corners, ribbed cone speaker with aluminum voice call. Is this the 1502 BW? how can I tell? I read that this is the "preferred" NV400.
Any opinions on swapping speaker for newer 1501 or JBL?
Is this the 400 that does not need the "mod"?
I plan on choosing between this and my 112, which I love, but am interested in hearing the difference in power as it relates to sustain.
Any ideas and opinions are welcome.
Thanks, Jim P

That's the 1502 speaker if it has ribs. That's what is in mine. There will be a label on the speaker to tell you what model it is (you may have to remove speaker to see it). In my opinion, I would never trade out the 1502 for a 1501. The 1502 has better bottom end while having crisp highs (although the 1501 is also a very good speaker. I just prefer the 1502).

That model (siver hardware) is more than likey before the mods, so I would check with the previous owner to see if he upgraded it, or check with Mike Brown at Peavey and give him your serial number and he will be able to tell you if the amp has the change made at the factory.

I sent mine to Ken Fox and he did his mod which improved the tone and reverb 100% in my amp (which already sounded good).

Also I tried the JBL that I had in a Session 400, and it didn't sound as good as the Black Widow in the NV400. It came out as fast as I put it in (and I used to be a die hard JBL guy).

We began installing our mod at s/n08575482. However, if you purchased your amp used, the previous owner might've install the mod himself. The only was to tell in this case is to remove thc chassis and compare components with this list;

The amp has no mod. Wasn't the mod intended for the 1501 speaker, not the earlier 1502? JP

I never saw or heard anything about the mod being for the 1501, athough I can see where it would help it out.

There are some older threads here that indicate the mod was invented to make up for the different tone of the 1501 speaker vs the 1502. Evidently the bass response and mids were designed into the amp for the 1502. When the 1501 was put into the NV400, there were complaints about the sound, hence the mods. A forum search yielded a lot of info about the differences in early (chrome corners, 1502 ribbed speaker) vs later(black corners, 1501 speakers). After the aforementioned serial #, PV factory installed the mod. From what I understand, the Lemay mod, or whatever you choose to call it, was never intended for the earlier 400's with 1502's.

Can anybody else verify any of this?

Thanks for all the help, JP

I must have missed those threads. The Fox mod sounds great with the 1502, I can imagine it does wonders with the 1501 too. Might even help with the JBL.

We have done close to 200 mods now and most are used n amps with the 1501-4SB. It makes either amp/speaker combination sound very nice!

Nowadays, people seem to be trying to get their sound to actually ‘sound’ as artificial as possible! I don't quite understand what happened to the quest for a *natural* sound! “It are, what it are”! Come in AK Jerry!
