me and my girlfriend are going to explore the us (and the spots where steel guitar began and was all about) at the time from march to april in 2010!
we'll start (where else?) in nashville and go on by car via texas, los angeles to las vegas! (and maybe i have to marry me gal there in a cheap, drive through wedding chapel )
so, it would be very, very nice to know some places (nice people), where we have to go by or where to stop! maybe some nice invites, too?!
then we'll plan our route with that!
and is it better to rent a car or buy and old one and go big with a full size 69er?? (this would be my choice)
cheers from germany
guido
by the way, i need some new boots - snake, lizzard and so on prefered! _________________ Sho~Bud Pro II, Sho~Bud LDG, Fender '79 Vibrosonic 1x15 JBL, Fender '72 Bandmaster Reverb + Custom 2x12 Vintage Alnico Cab, Fender 75 1x15", Randall Steel Man 500, Peavey Session 500, Goodrich L120, Sho~Bud Pedal

Guido,
Come up north from California and Nevada to beautiful Oregon. There is a thriving pedal steel community in the Portland area. Plus, you can see the Pacific Ocean, mountains, desert, rivers, whatever you like. The Sierra pedal steel guitar is made here in the Portland area. |

Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans, Austin, TX...missing any of those would be regretful.
Austin is one of our best cities for music right now.
Do yourself a huge favor and see if you can catch Dale Watson or Redd Volkaert at Ginnys or the Broken Spoke. email Neil Flanz and see if you can get a lesson! |

I agree with all the above. If you do Colorado you should hit South Dakota as well. Beautiful state with lots of cool stuff to see. Mt Rushmore, Badlands etc. _________________ GFI D10, Fender Steel King, Hilton Vpedal,BoBro, National D dobro, Marrs RGS |

Guido, while you're in the Nashville area, I highly recommend that you stop in at " Steel Guitar Nashville " at 123 Mid Town Ct. in Hendersonville,TN. and see the one and only, "Bobbe Seymour". You'll be glad you did. |

I was in the US for the first time last year and went from L.A. via San Fr. to the famous nat. parks such as Yosemite, Death Vallye, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Monument Vallye, Grand Canyon and Las Vegas where we flew home again.
Each day was ttruly amazing.
The wonders of nature there were absolutely grand!!!
A holiday I will never forget.

I would echo Ben's comments having been to all of these places recently. Gatlinburg in Tennessee is simply charming, and some towns in Kentucky are just beautiful.
Enjoy!! _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. Telonics TCA-500, Webb 614-E, |

In Nashville, if it comes down to the Grand Ole Opry or Bobbe Seymour's Steel Guitar Nashville...what a no brainer....SGN wins in a landslide. If you go downtown during the week, look for Carco Clave and Renee Truex as well as Mike Sweeney....and of course, the Time Jumpers on Monday night at the Station Inn. _________________ D10 Emmons LeGrande SKH (rebuilt by Billy Knowles), D10 Emmons Push/Pull (setup by Billy Knowles) , SD10 Rittenberry |

One tip for Europeans:
Driving from Nashville to LA is about the same as driving from Berlin to Moscow. It's a *BIG* country.
I'd also recommend the Pacific Northwest for scenic beauty. I've lived all over the US, and it's my favorite. Not much steel guitar up here, however. You can luck out, but it doesn't compare to Nashville or Austin in terms of live music.
I wouldn't recommend buying a car. Right now car rentals are amazingly cheap, due to the economy, and I imagine it won't be a lot different in a year. |

Dan, You say you don't imagine the situation with this economy will be much different in a year. We'll see about that. I think we'll soon be looking back at these days as the good old days. |

Don, I meant that I didn't think it would be better. I imagine there will be plenty of excess rental car capacity, which means cheap rentals. |

I had the distance between Nashville and LA wrong, it's more like driving from Lisbon Portugal to Moscow. |

Check out the book "Roadfood"
http://www.roadfood.com/
It will be a start at finding decent food on the road. The standards for what is thought of as food on the freeways in the USA is very low and mostly corporate chains. You will be more healthy and get a better feel for the country if you take the time to seek out the small independent places.
also there is fun info here:

I didn't dislike the food in the Cracker Barrel and Outback diners when I went last month. Eating out in the States compared to the UK is a cheap exercise. A pub meal in the UK will generally cost at least 2 -3 times as much as a decent diner in the States, and restaurant prices in both countries just don't compare at all. Ours are far higher. As with vehicles, gas prices, clothes and electronic goods, the USA has it much cheaper than we do.
Hiring a car and touring is not overly expensive - just watch out for the Highway Patrol. I got pulled over by a HP officer as I was unaware of the protocol of not using the inside lane on the freeway when an officer has pulled a driver over to the hard shoulder. I learned that one very quickly from a cop who hadn't taken his sense of humour tablet that day. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. I didn't read the whole thread, but a drive from Salt Lake City to Denver via southern Utah and Colorado would show you an amazing world. Nothing like it where you live... _________________ I need an Emmons! |
