Special & Educational Moments after HSGA Convention–
Watching Phil Bender play solo on the beach at Waikiki. He was looking for quiet solitude
and he found it on the beach at Waikiki. Haze in the background is called Vog. Volcanic ash
mixed with fog which is rare in Hawaii.
The Maori Greeting in New Zealand called the hongi. I saw this several times and thought that it
would interest you.
Jamming and talking story with Ron Kanahele. That guy has so many stories about the
Rogers family and especially Uncle Benny. Vog in background.
Steel Guitar by Wayne Shishido at the Halekulani with a lovely Kanoe dancing the hula
with Diamond Head as the background. What an experience!
Hawaiian Steel Guitar at the Marriott in Waikiki with a Master Player, L-R Gary Aiko, Poma'ika'i, Momi Bee, Alan Akaka.
Alan Akaka
Bobby Ingano on steel with well-known slack key stars George Kuo and Martin Pahinui ,
And Aaron Mahi on bass. Aaron formerly was conductor for Royal Hawaiian Band,
And presently is Assistant Conductor for the Honolulu Symphony.
Traveling over the Pali with Jack Aldrich, John Mills from Australia, and my wife, we enjoyed
Derrick Mau on the steel guitar at Honey’s near Kailua. This picture is the new Honeys.
The old Honeys was established in Kaneohe by his mother, Emily Leimaile Silva Ho better
known as Honey Ho. Honey’s is famous because there is where Don Ho got his start.
It became a center for entertainment.
In this informal environment, there is an encouragement for people to dance.
Another special moment -
While strolling through the Moana Surfrider Hotel, we happened on a Farrington High School special Hawaiian show.
I asked some students, ‘ does any one play the steel guitar?’. One young man popped up and said that he did.
His name was Jordan Baguio, a young Filipino. We talked briefly and he said that Bobby Ingano was teaching
him steel. What a coincidence.
Afterwards I ran into another professional steel player who plays 2 nights a week at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
His name was Kalapa Koanui. He appeared to be around 40 years of age. He was rehearsing for an evening event
in the courtyard so was not able to get more information. Anybody know anything about Kalapa?
Legends of Hawaiian Music - – May 2, 2009 – 5 to 9 PM
The Legends of Hawaiian Music is an Annual Special Events Program. It was held in Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii. Because this
program was recommended by Alan Akaka and Greg Sardinha, both Kailua residents, they were aware of the program
because Alan was a particpant. Based on their recommendation, Warren and Carole Slavin, John Mills, Kay Das, Joan
and I rented a cab to cross the Pali into Kailua. It cost $60 plus tips, but well worth it.
Many groups performed but there was some special groups.
Famous Sons of Hawaii, Eddie Kamae with Paul Kim on steel guitarist.
Better picture of Eddie
Alan Akaka on steel with Momi Bee and Aaron Mahi.
Ron Johnson, a fireman, plays steel on the program
Two steel guitar braddahs, Alan & Ron
Our group - of course the braddahs and sistahs need kau kau (to eat)
Partial view of the large crowd at the Kailua Program
And the sun sets on Hawaiian shores.
Kay Das may have some better pictures. Come on Kay with your pictures. I must confess that my camera was not up to par.
Aloha, [/size] |

Don, thanx for posting the info about Kalapa and Jordan!
Havn't heard of Kalapa, but will stop by the RHH and do some researching, and ask Bobby about Jordan when I see him today at The Elks Club. He's playing with Eddie, Mike, and Ocean, 4-6pm.
This is the version of The Son's Of Hawaii that will be going to Japan at the end of June for three shows to represent them at the 50th Anniversary of this legendary group.
I think Jordan is/was? one of Alan Akaka's students.
OK, Kalapa/Mike, is the player on the classic Pandanas Club recordings.
And Jordan, I know him (couldn't recognize him from the pic) from the steel classes taught by Neil Scott which I subbed for a year ago. His little brother, Jason, is also learning steel, at least I hope he/they still are. Glad to hear that Jason is still interested.
Bobby did stop in and give the class some of his knowledge a few times, but nothing one on one yet.

Great photos Don! Thanks for posting them and giving us a look into the HSGA Hawaii convention.
Can you pass along any steel guitar playing tips that you picked up? ![Mr. Green](images/smiles/icon_mrgreen.gif) |

Dang Don, next time I'm hangin' with you! You seemed to catch it all - thanks for the pics.
This year I'm going over in June for a couple weeks.
Hope to get back to HSGA in '11
