This film was made before Spade had his hit "Shame On You" which then became the Band's Theme Song.
Prior to this Spade used "Steel Guitar Rag" on his remote Radio Broadcasts from the Riverside Rancho from Glendale, Ca. Joaquin Murphy was the Steel player. |

So Bigsby's came with horseshoe magnets? Did he get them from Rickenbacher, or make them himself... or none of the above?
BTW I just got "Spade Cooley 1945-1946" on the Country Routes label RFD CD 30. Although there was no steel guitar at all on the second half of the disc* the tracks that Murphey plays on are excellent. The first 2 numbers ("Redwing" and "Guitar Swing") are from acetates that Smokey Rogers had kept and the fidelity is outstanding for a live recording. I need to look for "Spade Cooley 1945" next.
I just got the Joaquin Murphey book by John McGann and Andy Volk and that should keep me busy for the next decade or two. Not that I would ever try to copy him (if I could!) but I do want to study the patterns- just the way he gets from Point A to Point B- as well as the chords that he plays.

I've wondered about that Bigsby with the Ricky pick ups too. I don't know the history of JM's Bigsbys other than he had more than a couple.
