I am fortunate enough to have a Scheerhorn squareneck. I am contemplating installing a Fishman resophonic spider Nashville series pickup. This would also require drilling the endblock for an endpin jack, as it just has a screw-mounted strap button.

Does anyone have experience with this Fishman pickup, especially in regards to how it affects the acoustic sound of the instrument? Will it be sacrilegious to drill the tailblock of my Scheerhorn?

If I were fortunate enough to own a Scheerhorn, I wouldn't consider modifying it. I would put the Aura in a Gold Tone or similar guitar and leave the Scheerhorn for accoustic work.
I'm just a beginner though and have not played a Scheerhorn -- with or without an Aura.

I'm with Bill. Keep the 'horn as is for acoustic gigs and do the pickup thing on a W/S Rob Ickes or something equivalent to that. I've got the whole Fishman/Aura set-up in my dobro and it is OK, but not the "second coming" IMO. There are times that I regret doing it. If I had a Scheerhorn and I liked how it sounded, I would leave it alone. But maybe that's because I'm both a tone slut and a wuss. : )

+1 with Bill and Tom

I also have the whole Fishman/Aura rig on my OMI Dobro. The rig is a godsend for me with live work in a loud band with a hard hitting drummer. But, in terms of the pure acoustic quality of the instrument, it really too the "bite" out of it. Big-time tradeoff for me, but a necessary one in my situation. If I had a really nice guitar like the Sheerhorn, I'd think twice about modding it.

BTW, Brad Nickerson installed it all for me, so I know it was done right.

This echoes other comments I've seen elsewhere on the forum but if you do decide to go ahead with the Fishman rig I strongly advise taking it to an expert who has done it before. It is not an advisable do-it-yourself sort of job. I do have that pickup rig in my Wechter Scheerhorn and have been very happy with it.

Think it will bring you some happy moments ?

Then do it ! What the hell ? I trust you aren't gonna hack the job and visually, it would be difficult to spot anyway. There is a hole drilled in there already from that strap pin, you're just going to enlarge it a tad. Installing the p'up won't ruin resale value and who knows what inspiration you may derive from the mod ?

Be Happy and adventuresome ! We're only going this way once, enjoy your Horn to the fullest !

Very Happy

I had it installed in my maple L body Scheerhorn, and it sounds great, and is a no brainer for sound guys. It will change the acoustics of the guitar at the least 10% though. If you can live with this I would do it, and you can always return it to stock, if you want to.

Since Scheerhorn does not have a website that I can find, can one of you tell me what the different body styles are? I have seen two referred to by letter designations - the "L body" mentioned above, and the other I can't remember right now. How do I know what I have?

The other body style is the R (Regal) body. The L (large) body is, well, larger than the R body. The R body is closer to the size of traditional dobros. Lots of good info on this subject over at Reso-Nation.

Yes, he helped design the Fishman Aura system.
