watch this clip on youtube...

it's funny, i was thinking about a pedal steel with doubled strings this week after my kid was wearing a t-shirt with one of those gibson double neck guitars with the twelve string and a six string on it. in the s-g style. seemed to me that a pedal steel version might sound really cool.
then i watched this clip. and there it was. does anyone know what recording shot is talking about that jimmy day cut?
what album is it? does this guitar still exist?
love to hear about it.... _________________ 82'sho-bud u-12, frankendekely u-12, bride of frankendekley u-12, a whole mess of other instruments...finger still messed up but getting better... |

like i said, one day i'm gonna post pics of the frankendekley. i guess i'll have to post a picture of the happy couple together before i give frankendekley a makeover.....

I'm no expert, but I'll talk about these (since no one else seems to want to). Sho~Bud built a few of these back in the '60s. I don't know how many, 5 or 6 for sure, in different configurations, and maybe a dozen or so. (Dave Jackson could probably say how many.) They were played by several famous players - Emmons, Drake, Charleton, and a few others I suppose, and have what I like to refer to as a "hauntingly beautiful" sound. The down-side (yes, there's always a down-side) was that the doubled strings weren't set up separately (with their own pulling fingers). This made tuning a real bear, and they soon disappeared from use, and from sight. Undoubtedly, there's still a few around.
A couple of good examples of the sound are the 1965 recordings "We're Not Kids Anymore", and "Just Between The Two Of Us", both by Ernest Tubb and Loretta Lynn, with Buddy Charleton doing the playing.
(Maybe someone like Walter Stettner could post clips of these two songs. )
A updated design with a new changer, and the ability to tune all the strings properly, would be a real treasure, IMHO. |

I always wondered why Buddy's steel sounded strange on those songs! Now I know. |
