Good to see a new "old time" type song on Letterman, sung by songwriter Teddy Thompson. Never heard of him before, but he sounded great ("Change Of Heart")...and he used a pedal steel in his sound.

Teddy Thompson is the son of Richard and Linda Thompson of Fairport Convention "fame". Richard Thompson is an amazing song writer and very creative guitarist on acoustic and electric. I hadn't heard of Teddy until I saw that show. I really liked what he did and how he presented it.

That was Greg Leisz on steel, playing his S12 Williams.

Great music on his Letterman appearance, I too wished the steel had a little more volume. Now if we just get II Divo to use a pedal steel. Dale

This is a great example of why Greg is so in demand and shows what an exceptional musician he is. He was given the task of adding a country steel sound that supports Teddy's voice without getting in the way. This is with a string quartet that is playing in all the spots that the steel would normally go. So Greg comes up with the perfect part that becomes an essential part of the tune. He the ties the strings into the tune and blends them with the vocal. If there was no Greg playing steel the strings would sound trite and contrived.

Bob, that was an astute take on the arrangement of that song.

You know, we have an endless number of threads started here on the Forum about how you can't get any good, more traditional sounding country music on the "today's hot country!" type radio stations and it's certainly true enough. Then there are a handful of us that occasionally will post on those threads that it's still out there, you just have to look for it anymore, it doesn't get dumped in your lap.

I wish it didn't require having to seek it out, turn over rocks, beat the bushes, and the like but it's there.

You guys need to check out Teddy Thompson's album which was released two years ago, Upfront & Lowdown. Mostly traditional country. On the CD cover in the upper left hand corner it even reads "STEREOPHONIC."Cool

Greg Leisz plays on a number of tracks on pedal steel. David Mansfield contributes beautiful, old school style dobro on track 6, "My Heart Echoes." Teddy does a a bluesy, slowed down version of "Walking The Floor Over You" and his dad Richard, who I believe is one of the finest guitarists on the planet, contributes some killer, twangy sounding Tele on the tune.

I wasn't able to go, but my brother recently caught Teddy in San Francisco. He told the audience after finishing one of the songs off this album that he had recorded an album of country songs and it didn't sell many copies but he was happy he made the record.

Teddy was also very prominent in the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack, which also featured Forumite Boo Bernstein on steel.

Below is link to an NPR feature on Teddy from a couple years ago:

I agree with Bob Hoffnar here. This is a perfect example of tasteful professional steel playing. The steel player is NOT over playing, yet if you took his parts out and knew they were there you would miss them. Blending with that string quartet is not an easy thing to do intonationally or otherwise. Mr. Leisz shows himself to be a very tasteful steel player, and I'm not at all surprised that he is in demand. Less is more. A producers dream.

Very Happy Rolling Eyes Laughing

Bent : You hit the nail right on the head; I had the privelege of backing a Duo back in 1983 and they were strictly Traditional country. Hearing this group brought back many memories of my session work with the duo; All performed on two Flat top guitars , myself on steel and a bass player. Was my first time to play this style of country but really loved doing it. This young man is absolutely fantastic; I wish nothing but the very best for him; and Greg surely does an out-standing job on the steel guitar ; very tasteful playing..Bernie Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

I apologize for taking the spot light from Teddy's talent..forgive me guys & gals..BG
