I have a pair of these that are from a 1963 Fender Double Showman. The speaker cones are in great shape, but the surrounds have cracks in them.
I at first was going to recone them, but know I am thinking to just replace the surrounds.
Can anyone offer advice based on previous experiences, please.

I have found a family run, speaker repair service in Florida that is outstanding. Give him a call, I know he can help you out. The service is super, too. Typically 3 day turn around in the shop, unless they need special parts that are not in stock. Just down the road in Lake Worth, Florida.

He does list surrounds for pro speakers as well as re-coning

JBL Surround/Pro Speakers

8 Inches $30.00
10 Inches $35.00
12 Inches $40.00
15 Inches $45.00
18 Inches $50.00

You can also smooth some silicone caulk over the cracks. When it drys, it stays flexible.
I've done it to many speakers in the past and it does a great job!

Also rubber cement with the brush in the bottle. I have used it to re-dope the edges of old speakers as well:

Thanks for the information.
I will probably go for new surrounds.
These are the original from my 63 showman, and have the dust cover reinforcments per Dick Dale.
I think keeping the original cones is important (less costly too).
How is your 68 Showman coming, Ray?

Lefty

Got the cab done and it's great. Got a 1968 Bandmaster for now for the top. Fits the same. Still have to re-cover the Bandmaster, all the electronics are done!!!

Carl, at So Fla Speaker a great guy to deal with. He will do a great job for you

Thanks Ken. A 68 bandmaster is the first amp I bought when I was 16. Still have it, and it is going strong. I have a 1968 Dual Showman head and a 68 1-15 cabinet I am working on right now. I put a 4 ohm Weber california speaker in it. The head I bought on the forum, and it is pretty loud. I have a new silver "Showman" front panel to put on it to make it match the cabinet.
That Bandmaster is a good match to the cabinet without blowing your eardrums out.
good luck, and thanks.

For the silicone/rubber cement fix, would you treat both sides of the surround or just one?

Back in 1976 a guy I knew who was a roadie gave me a D130F with the cone (all parts) completely trashed. I've been hanging on to this thing ever since, thinking to get it re-coned some day!

I mentioned this in another thread a little while back, and someone suggested getting it re-coned by Weber. Might this guy be a better bet for getting as authentic as possible a re-cone?

I have used Weber. He recently trained another re-coner. Does not do it himself. Took 2 months to get two 10" speakers done.

Carl at South Florida Speaker Repair does an excellent job and will get all my business from now on.

Weber's re-coning service is a lot of hype, IMHO.

To better answer your question, this is from So Fla Repair's website:

Our team was trained by industry leaders including JBL, Electro-Voice and Waldom Schools Of Speaker Reconing.

We are factory authorized by JBL Professional, JBL Consumer Products, Cerwin-Vega, Electro-voice, Altec Lansing, Yamaha, Infinity, Harmon Kardon, Celestion, Toa, Community, Gauss, RCF, Velodyne, Genisis and Soundbridge Acoustic Labs.

The accordion edge of the 130F series was done differently than the original 130 along with a wider gap in the voice coil. The 130F accordion edge is painted with some sort of black rubbery dope. This keeps the speaker cone from twisting upon loud transients and burning out the voice coil.

If you have some cracks in the accordion edge part of the speaker then just get those repaired. There has not been a REAL JBL130F recone kit availiable for a long time and anything else used will not be as the original. Really sad that there are so many of these fine JBL frames needing the right kits to bring them back to life.

I usually just do the top side but if the underside is accessible, you can always dab a bit on there as well.
I find that with the rubber cement (being thinner than the silicon) you need usually more than one coat.

Bill, that's not totally true.
Weber makes a non F gap(paper to the edge) and D130/K130 kits.
Bar none they are the best after market kits.
They even upped the power handling, with out any compromise's.
I recommend buying there kit,and having your re coner do the install.

Does the Weber coil use the same JBL edge wound aluminum voice coil? If not then it is inferior.

Absolutely Bill, They spent 2 years in RD to get it right.
I had a very long conversation with Ted JR, he told me how they figured out, how to get the non F gap paper to the edge driver to have a power handling of 60 watts(original being 15 watts).
Which is pretty cool if you want to use a Hi Fi spec JBL, as in Standel 25L15's or upgraded 50's Fender tweed amps like Speedy and Jimmy used.
They also do cloth edge, for your later D/K/M series.
I got a 4 ohm paper edge kit, and had Neils in Sacramento do the re cone.
I put it in a Standel Artist, at first I was a little dubious, but after a long break in BINGO.
They nailed it.
BTW, even the lumpy Waldham Kits have edge wound coils.

I'm a little confused with the various replies. Does Weber, or anyone, have the correct wherewithal to accurately re-cone a D-130F? Lee, you appear to address only the non-F D-130. Bill laments that correct re-cone kits for the F don't exist.

Brint, re read my post.
They also do the F gap specs (cloth edge) D/K/M series.
I think there kit is a very accurate reproduction of the original JBL parts.
I would recommend, it to any one re coning a vintage JBL.
That said, I have no experience of there re coning services or there own JBL type drivers?(California, and Neo).
