I found a couple of Australian lap steel builders on the internet.
Cole Clark Guitars makes an 8
www.coleclarkguitars.com
(Ben Harperlikes'em)
They even make one that is a combination lap steel and skateboard.
_________

These guys make a 7, and maybe could be convinced to build an 8 string:

There are plenty of 6's around these parts, Al, but 8's are a different matter. I asked some local builders who were keen to have plenty of my money but I went for an imported Gold Tone lap which was only about $350 landed. Elderly Instruments are pretty good to deal with IMO.

I also landed a Stringmaster triple 8 here for about A$2600 which I bought off Ebay but that was before the bottom dropped out of the Australian peso.

good luck

Hi Al,
Have you visited our local steel guitar web site?
http://www.brissteelguitar.com

Go to Links and under LUTHIERS you will find Des Anthony. Des is a local player of pedal steel lap and dobro and builds really fine instruments. You can visit his web site or give him a call. Des lives at Pinjarra Hills. You might also look in the FOR SALE category.

Maton certainly did, and they were great sounding guitars.

Build one yourself. After all, a lap steel is just a plank with a pick-up on it. Most of the rest is just cosmetic. The quality of the sound depends on the quality of the components. Believe me, I've built many of them, and it doesn't require much in the way of carpentry skills. I built one in a weekend. I've also built one which took the better part of a year. The one that took the better part of a year turned out much better, but the weekend one plays okay...
