This might not help at all, but I once had a Kustom Lead III amp. It was 130 watts, with a 15' speaker. I'm thinking it was intended to be a keyboard amp. I bought it cheap from a kid that played an amplified accordion. Before that, I only had a couple of smaller guitar amps, so this was the first amp I got that I thought would work for pedal steel. If I had it now, I probably could get a decent sound from it, but back then, it always seemed very "honky" and I was never happy with it. I sold when I found a Session 400. I'm not sure how it compares to the Lead II. But it did seem to be well built and sturdy. _________________ Bill Moore...

Hey K.J....I have an old Kustom 250 piggy back amp which is covered in blue sparkle tuck and roll upholstery. It's a killer amp and has that old rock and roll vibe to it. I have two cabinets with four 12" speakers in each of 'em. I do an oldies rock and roll show from time to time and use either this set up or my Marshall stack. My Kustom has a built in tremolo and a very nice sounding reverb. If you turn 'em both on and plug a Les Paul into it you can nail that old John Fogerty tone easily with this rig.......If it didn't take up so much room in the van I'd use it all the time........JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

If you have any questions, please email me. I not only happen to live in Kansas...but I also happen to own several old Kustom amps and even an old Woodson.
Most Kustoms are still in service today. They were built solid & seem to hold up well. Tuck N'Roll ones are now actually sought after and the plain tolex ones are nice too!!!
Creedence Clearwater Revival used to use them. Other famous acts used them as well. Most of their amps featured reverb & tremolo. Some were equipped with cheaper speakers, some e.v.s I believe and some were specially equipped with JBLs.
There are a few good websites I can direct you to as well.
Casey
P.s. I will soon be posting some good ol' Kustoms for sale here in the forum & on craigslist. If anyone is interested, please let me know. |

My whole band was Kustomized back in the 70's. I had a Kustom 250 head with all the effects and 2 cabinets, each containing 2 15" speakers and a 15" horn. That rig really screamed. The whole stage was filled with black, tuck and roll Kustoms. The sound ( noise ) was awesome. |

Paul,
Thanks for that link. My band had all Kustom stuff back in the sixties. I lived close to the factory and visited there quite a bit. I later became aquainted with Bud Ross through another business. He is a cool guy.

Standard Kustom 250 watt power amplifier
These Power Amps Are Bullet Proof, I've had one Running with The Speaker Leads Shorted For Over a Week with no damage. Good Thing because the Driver Transistors with the built in heat sinks are no longer available RCA Part 40409 and 40410.
Its Just a Shame that Their Preamps sounded like Crap.
They had one Flaw that Contributed to excessive hum, The Lead for the center tap on the secondary of the power transformer has a lug that is crimped, Solder that connection on the lug and the hum will be greatly reduced.

I worked at an amusment park in the 60's called Lincoln Park in Dartmouth, MA. A band performed there called "The Barbarians" and the stage beamed with Kustom amps. What memories
Black, silver sparkle, blue sparkle and Red sparkle tuck and roll Kustom amps. Imperessive!!!! |

I have a Kustom that is identical to that...I think. The only difference is, mine looks almost new and I think it is a closed back.

I too played through custom equipment and still have two Kustom 200 amps both have Emenance {?} 15 in speakers one is black and the other is sparkle blue our bass player plays a Baby Ampeg and gets awesome sound!! Would not have anything else. One went through a fire in a club he was playing, replaced the power cord and it fired right up!! how is that for quality!! Did you ever look inside one of the amps? Nothing but a bunch of very large caps!!
Anyway these old amps were bullet proof almost 50 years and never been in the shop!! Love EM!!!! |
