I had messed around with open E slide on my regular guitar for a long time before I started playing Steel. I play 8 string C6th, but would like to set one of my steels to an 8 string E tuning. what do, or would most recommend?

My glorified E maj is less usefull than Steiner's or other E13s, but it's what I use/like, and it's enuf for me - G# E C# B G# E B E
I like that low E on the bottom. |

I also like the C# between the E and B.
I have always called it a C#minor7th tuning. |

I generally play blues type music on the std open E, how well does your tuning work for that style?

Rocky,- coming from a blues and rock background myself I fell for that tuning especially because it suits those styles so well, in addition to being very versatile and useful for other styles.
I don't have an 8-string anymore, but if I should get myself another one I'd definitely stick to that tuning. I'll probably restring my 6-string Asher for the top 6 strings of that tuning one of these days.

Steinar,
Thank you for your thoughts, one last thing and I probably will have all my questions answered on this. Do you have a preference for the D or C# and why, and what would this tuning be called E13?

I went back and forth between the C# and the D on the 6th string dependng on what suited the song best. My (highly personal) experience was that the C# made soloing more logical, especially in minor scales, while the D gave me access to more chords, like dominant 7ths and diminished, without slants. Plus, there are many typical blues/soul/rock riffs available with the 1-5-b7-1 configuration on the bottom four strings (think Ray Charles' "What I'd Say"..).
Yeah, I think with the D present it is usually refered to as "E13" (one of many variations) even though it would require an F# in there to qualify as a 'proper' E13 chord..
