I thought it appropriate since this is Easter Weekend and Merv Shiner had the original hit on "Here Comes Peter Cottontail". Merv used Jody Carver on some of his records, too.
Along with Merv will be Dusty Owens who wrote "Once More" that has been recorded by over 100 people (that he knows of). Dusty was also a regular on the Wheeling Jamboree. |

Hi Jack , Say hello to Merv for me !! I worked with him in Canada back in 1953 !! Hope he remembers !! He is a great guy and sings a lot of good songs !! I really enjoyed our trip to Canada !! PLEASE EXCUSE THE TWO EXTRA INPUTS !! COMPUTER WAS RUNNING SLOW !!! Eddie "C"

| Eddie, I didn't see this until this morning. But I've been invited back to the next jam and I'll tell Merv. He's 88 and has some problems getting around but his voice is still there and his memory is still as sharp as a tack. He still plays his guitar too. |

Mike, that was a must for Merv. He also sang his other "first" recording of "Why Don't You Haul Off And Love Me One More Time" that he recorded before Peter Cottontail.
You would have loved another guy that was there. He is a "walking dictionary" of country and western music - especially the older music. Someone would mention a song and he would tell you who wrote the song and who the person was that originally recorded it.
It was a "history lesson" between Merv, the guy that I mentioned, Dusty Owens and Bernie Waldon who is an ex DJ from Indianapolis (and Cincinatti). |

jack, please relay good wishes to merv from the newmans of sleepy hollow ranch. my ma sophie just returned to missouri on 4/10/09. after spending a couple of months here in florida. 96years and still flying around the country,,,the music peoples of that era certainly had some different genes that caused them to perpetuate the good in every way. but if we can wait a little longer, you can bet some of the later generations will fill their shoes. enjoyed your post. it will be forwarded.

Ken, I'll pass that on to Merv the next time we meet. Where or what is "Sleepy Hollow Ranch"? I retired to Florida from Kansas City, Mo.
I work a weekly jam "show" and it's all traditional country music and the audience is 99% retirees and about 75% snowbirds. There are those of us that are still keeping the "real" country music alive. |

Also at the jam was Sonny Oden, who was Dusty's lead guitar player when he was on the Wheeling Jamboree.

sleepy hollow ranch, working entertainment park , inn and rodeo grounds. near quakertown , pennsylyvania opened in may 1940 burned out winter 1963. that fire devastating to many industry folks. founded, owned, and operated by the midwesterners newman brothers pete and elmer,and their wives, the 'murray sisters' sophie and julie. the beginnings from des moines, iowa, 50,000 watt the W H O barndance, and the murray sisters at 50,000 watt W L S national barndance sleepy hollow ranch gang barnstormed the U S and canada for sponsors during the 1930's , with their midwestern swing, settling in the industrial east, philadelphia area. they had a built in fan base of farmers and ranchers and the military uprooted from all over the country. recorded for rca victor and others, appeared regularly on their own radio and television regionally, and network. including the hayloft hoedown barndance show which they spawned to give national acts a local radio / tv shot before sunday in the park. sleepy hollow booked names and acts from all over the country,,, nashville, wheeling, hollywood, shreveport, dallas, chicago. and all areas in between. the superstars as well as the supertalents of the day. variety and country western acts loved to play there. when those folks got into our environ, their 'goodness' and 'family ties' would just gravitate to the top. thank you for asking. precious memories on all.

| That sounds like a couple of parks I worked in central PA in the mid 60's. Shorty and Sally Fincher's Valley View Park in Hellam, PA (not far from York) and Himmelreich Grove near Lebanon. The parks had Sunday afternoon shows, usually with one or two local bands and either a Nashville or Wheeling Jamboree Headliner. Both of these parks went back to the 40's (that I know of). |

jack, that is great, hope you enjoyed the pennsylvania parks as much as they enjoyed you. the parks, were a very important part of the country western and variety acts business success during those days. some had different beginnings and profiles however all important indeed. merv probably played others as well. he being genuine and entertaining and always the gentleman. in what groups were you involved? hopefully, if you were around the newmans at all, we treated you with due respect.
