And in Ab, or is it G#? I think the drummer picked the key. |

That's the key it's normally played in, Ab. This is my favorite standard of all. I heard Bill Frisell last year on Piano Jazz say to Marian McPartland "this is a song I've been trying to play for years."
I love Bird's version, Bird Of Paradise. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Excellent track, beautiful tune.
Here is another version which intrigues me. It is solo piano by Richie Beirach. I think the album it is from is "Elm". While Keith shows his unbelievable technical chops on the intro above, Richie shows a harmonic mastery that is without peer, IMO.
There was a chart for this arrangement in a Keyboard magazine in 1992 along with an interview in which Richie complained about the predictability (?) of the cyclic progression of the tune and of how he tried to remodel the harmony around the melody. It may not be to everyone's taste but I love it.

Jeff Newman produced a C6 tab/cassette course on this song a number of years ago - just Paul Franklin playing unaccompanied. Awesome. |

Richie Beirach is a wonderful player and you can always hear the classical influence in his playing. He reminds me of Bill Evans at times. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

"And in Ab, or is it G#?"
Ab is a good key to play in if you are a brass player. The brass player plays in Bb, which is a very easy key to play in. So for a traditional jazz lineup, Ab is a pretty standard key. |
