What a bass sound!

In the past month, I've listened to two programs on the local jazz station about how the year 1959 was a great year for jazz. "Kind of Blue," Time Out" and Mingus Ah Um" were all released in '59 (and all on Columbia) I like the horn players on "Mingus Ah Um," "Mingus Oh Yeah," "The Clown," and "Blues and Roots." The way Mingus writes for horns and the way horns play it back is a great combination of honkin' R&B and bebop. For steel players, these albums are full cool (and useful) blues lines.
