Karen

I saw on your other post you're are buying a GFI S-10 from Bobbe. I don't know if he sells, or even if GFI makes, a "student model", but if not, you are not comparing apples to apples. The Carter Starter is not a "professional grade" guitar nor is it advertised as such.

My only advice to you is, get the best you can reasonably afford. Unless you are the type of person who jumps from one hobby/activity to the next, you will in all likelyhood (given the addicting nature of the pedal steel) want to upgrade down the road, which ultimately means loss of money.

I am sure you will get tons of opinions here, this is just my 2 cents.

Editing to say: More expensive doesn't always mean "better", but a "standard" (pro) GFI S-10 isn't a fair comparison to a Carter Starter.

Karen, I bought a GFI S-10, 4 pedals and 6 knee levers and I love it. I bought it not only because I got delivery quick, the weight of the psg (I have an old back), and the respect I have for Gene Fields abilities. Enjoy!!

GFI does make a student model, Herby Wallace has them at his place. Last I checked he had a new SD-10 red mica in stock.

I had a Carter-Starter, and it did exactly what I wanted it for. However, if I had it to do over again, I would have watched this forum for a few days or maybe a week or two, looking for a used pedal steel in the $1000-1200 range. If you're leery of buying a used one, you might consider a StageOne which sell new in the range of $1000 and I would say is likely superior to the Carter-Starter. GFI does make a student model, which I've seen comments here as it is also a good choice to begin with. If you do go for a Carter-Starter I would suggest buying a used one in the $500-650 range, and you won't have any trouble at all getting your money out of it later when you either lose interest or go to a pro-level guitar. You really have lots of options, but the best advice I can give is to watch the instruments up for sale on this forum for a little while. You should also search for posts asking similar questions as yours. Questions similar to yours get asked somewhat often here on the forum.

I just noticed your other post which seems to indicate you have already ordered a GFI from Bobbe. I don't think you would go wrong with a GFI, even if it is a student model. And, if it happens to be an Expo or and Ultra, then even more better.

Karen, you're not going to get many responses to this topic because it comes up regularly, and members don't want to say the same things over and over again.
I recommend you go to Search and type in Carter Starter and you'll have enough reading on the subject for hours. Very Happy

...you could type in Carter Farter and get some comments too. Laughing Laughing
