Good Morning,
Last night I experienced an embarassing equipment failure, thought I'd run it by you big brains.
I have been using a Peavey Renown amp for steel the past couple years. It's one of those 2 X 12 amps with lots of power and so on. I usually get good strong tone and have been generally pleased. But last night...GRRRRRR I was ticked off. First 'steel' song of the second set started off fine but part way through the signal started to fade out, then a crackle and it was back. Happened a couple of times and I thought it was a bad wire or my volume pedal was starting to go bad. Then we started another song and all I got was crackle. I franticly checked wires and plugs with the old wiggle test and it turned out to be right at the input to the amp, OK, switched out that wire. No difference. Eventually I just plugged the steel into the guitar amp and soldiered on.
So now I've taken the amp out of the cabinet and checked the jacks. I't all good, I suspect the input circuitry, Like any little signal overloads the very first stage. Anyone share this malady?

could be effects loop (if there is one). I have seen speakers do that (but you have two). clean all connections and jacks, reseat and clean plugs & see if that helps. Easy check on the effects loop ... just plug a known good cord from out to in.
I am sure you will get some other good tips along with these. |

It sound like it might be failing signal capacitors. I'd really get it checked out by Peavey or Ken Fox - the caps need to be changed on some of these 25 year old amps. |
