I understand the importance of good posture while playing. I'm wondering if having a seat with a back rest would keep me behind the guitar for longer practice sessions, if only to "take a load off" every 10 - 15 minutes instead of slouching down on the pad or getting up and planting myself on the couch. I would assume that leaning back while playing isn't the best idea for everyone, but maybe for some. Any leaners?

'Zackly. I'm a fan of the backrest for a lean in between songs, to stretch the muscles now and then, and to be able to change stresses on the back to keep from getting sore. Good thing.

Me I suggest a blonde about 20 to 45. to rub you baack and masage you fingers that pick the strings and hand that holds the bar. She doesn't have to be a real intellectual as you don't want a lotta uselessbanter to distract you from your main task. IMHO Of Course. If this offends any blonded insert the color of hair you like or thank you can get away with

I use a seat with a backrest for shows. It's an Elite Seat.

I use a TAMA drummers throne with adjustable height and adjustable back rest. It is the business.

I've used steel seats with backrests since the late 80's. Only way to go.

I currently have a Steeler's Choice "sidekick" model with backrest.

I have a great SteelSeat.Com chair with back rest, but honestly I scoot forward when I play and don't even use the back rest when playing. I DO use it and love it when NOT playing, relaxing and talking with the band, club customers, students in my teaching studio, etc. For live gigging I could generally live without it, honestly.

I love the back rest... but beware!... if you fail to latch the seat cushion to the main body of the seat... and decide to lean back to stretch those musles, you'll look like a complete idiot as you fall backwards off the seat.

Only did it once. :-)
I still however, take a double take to make sure the lid latches are connected so all the gear doesn't fall out of the seat when you pick it up to load out. Done that more then once <g>.

SteelSeat.Com backs are some sort of boat-seat hinge, it goes back to one location and can go no further, so they don't have that same problem, thank goodness. They have a little strap and button that just keeps the backrest in closed position.

I have, like Jeff, inadvertently dumped the seat contents by forgetting to close the lid latch, dang!

I don't like pack-a-seats with backs. I've had 4 different seats in the years I've been playing. One of those was an Elite seat with a back-rest. Not only did I not like the way it carried when folded up, I was constantly scraping my arms (on the backrest) to the bleeding point/ This was when reaching behind to adjust something or grab something. The folding metal rails that hold the back on the Elite have sharp ends and will cut you if you're not careful. (BAD DESIGN) Also I could never find leg tips that would fit the Elite properly, and as the result that bare metal scratched our hardwood floor in the house and made my wife very upset. I only used that seat about 2 months then went back to my old Cushcase seat without the back. I'm now planning on getting a new Steelers Choice seat without the back as well. My vote here is for NO BACKRESTS. They don't work for me.

I use a seat with a back-rest. I couldn't get by without it - just don't do what I did at a gig once and lean back to stretch your muscles between songs and tip the seat over, it's no fun at all.

How quickly we forget the days when finding a clean fold-up metal chair at the gig was the seat of choice. I still own my original SHO~BUD padded seat. I thought I went to heaven when I first got it back in the 70's. We're lucky to have such a nice choice to pick from these days.... back or no back.

Jeff,
I do remember those days, bought my own padded metal chair, later graduated to a pacseat. I just recently installed a back on mine...Don't know why I waited so long, my old wore out back loves it.

After using my ShoBud packaseat for 25 yrs, my wife bought me a Walker Seat for Christmas 3 yrs ago. I've been using it exclusively, now. But, I rarely lean back when I'm playing, so, I'm not aware of any support from it. I use the backrest between songs, though. I'm thankful for that.

Bill... ditto on the back support. In the cold months, its also a nice place to hang my winter jacket. :-)
