Looking for lap steel guitar made for my aunt: Ione Ray. Would appreciate any information anyone might have.

Ted, offhand, I'd say that was a Vega steel. They are the only ones that made anything close to that beautiful oddity, except maybe for the ultra rare swept wing aluminum Ricky's that seem to exist only in pictures today, and even those are hard to find...
Could that have been a one off home made piece?

[/img]The lap steel was made by Smokey Ray, Ione's husband. The picture is from the 40's. Apparently she sat in with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at one time, but I'm not sure what instrument she played. She also played 12 string guitar among others. She passed away in Alburquerque New Mexico around 1990. Would have played in Smokey's band around Louisiana. I will get more info. form my sister later. The guitar dissapeared in New Mexico. |
