I just picked up an older Fender 400 on Ebay, and so far all it's missing is the bridge cover, one of the cables, and 7 of the 16 tuning stop screws - they're all pretty aged, so it's hard to tell which were originally black and which were polished.

I got it for a great price, and even with the old strings on it, it sounds great, so I'm not that broken up about the missing pieces. I'm just wondering if there is a good source for the cables, and even the screws, if anyone knows something very similar that would work. Any info would be helpful, and yes, you can move this to the "Wanted" forum section if you have to. Thanks!

I'm not sure, but I think 4-40 allenhead capscrew will work. If there is a mill supply house in your area, they will have them in stock, you may want to shine the lowers with a piece of fine sandpaper.Take one of the screws with you to get the right size.Also you can use an allen wrench to tune with. There is room for capscrews.

Jonathan,

Is it a short or long scale Fender? The short is usually sunburst with a cam bridge and roller nut with the Jaguar style pickup. The long scale has the wider Jazzmaster style pick up with a fixed bridge and nut unless they've been replaced with a roller bridge and nut.

Long scale, Jazzmaster-style pickup, six pedals, and roller bridge and nut. None of these came stock with roller bridges and nuts?

As I understand it the long scale roller bridge and nuts were factory mods many times done in the field by the dealer.

My 400 sounds like yours.


I added 3 pedals and a roller bridge and nut.

I like your DeArmond volume pedal! I thought about getting one for the Pink Floyd aesthetic, but found a low-profile vintage Fender one with both jacks on one side.

The DeArmond works nice and I have a cord with a right angle jack so it isn't in the way. What part of PA you from? I was born in McKeesport.

Cables are easy to come by, and there are replacement turnbuckles that work. Tough parts to find are the "bellcrank" levers between pedal rod and cable assembly and the small pulleys - plus each cable assembly has to be sized to a particular pedal.

Nevertheless, there are some workarounds. You might post over on the Fender steel forum and read some of the previous posts - also posting pics of exactly what "guts" you DO have wouldbe really helpful!

I did find 4-40 cap screws easily enough, at a shop in Latrobe, Pennsylvania called The Nut House - perfect length, 8 stainless and 8 black; looks pretty sweet.
