OK...I am pretty much going to acquire a D-8. One neck I am going to use Doug Beaumier's B11 tuning on one neck and the other? Maybe E7....????..suggestions appreciated????
Also, which neck would you suggest the B11 tuning?

PERSONALLY, I'd put C6th/A7th on the near neck, and if you're commited to B11th, I'd put it up on top.
The TWO tunings work well together.......quite compatable with each other. Not as drastic a sound change as going from C6th to A6th or whatever. |

I would go E13 on the front and C6 on the back. The reason is, C6 can easily be retuned to A6 or B11. If you use the C13 (E C A G A C Bb G), you can easily retune to Doug's B11. If you use Jules Ah See's C13, you can use the B11 with the low B.
C6 is very easily retuned. You have C6/A7, A6, B11, etc., all with a few turns of the tuning keys.

I have the E13 tuning on the outside neck of my old National D-8. I had C6th for a while on the inside neck but tuned it down a fret to B6th as it's more compatible with the E tuning as it's the V chord and it's much easier to remember chord positions on the fly.......JH in Va.

On mine, outside neck is an e13 variation-
G#
E
C#
B
G#
F#
D
E
and standard A6 on the nearest neck. That one I can retune to B11 or a C6 variation real easy. Lots of versatility with this setup.
I have also found that putting the tuning with the lightest strings on the thicker neck helps balance out the sound some. |

| Hey Len. I went through the whole tuning thing and ended up with the same one Jon is using. Chris Scruggs actually suggested it to me, and he in turn got it from Brad Betchel. I basically has the Leon/Wills tuning on the bottom and the Helms/Hank on top. That way you can get the fat, lush western swing chords on bottom, and the high, lonesome whine on top. I love it. There are some really cool pedal steel type walkups and such that lay out nice too. I am using A6 on the back neck. Love the low,deep bass slants in the lower register. Plus a straight 6 tuning is essential in so many styles. I even use it jamming with rock guys to do bottle neck type licks. Its all there. Havent got to 11th tuning yet. Maybe one day. Lots of new posts on that one. I think in A6 you can retune one string and get an 11th chord. Anyway, hope you enjoy your D8. I play mine out constantly. Never had more fun! TC |
