I just got back into the music scene after a 16 year hiatus and have lost touch with many of my old picker buddies out there in the state of Delaware. Anyone belong to the forum? I'd love to hear from any of you guys/gals. Seems like we're a dying breed in the first state. Heck can't even find a store anywhere that sells steels or parts... bummer!
I've got a 30 year old (I believe it's a "Christmas Tree" - 15" speaker) Sho-Bud Amp that needs tubes... anyone know where I can get some? I'd like to get this piece up and running again. |

Never played there, or anywhere above the canal except once as the opening band for Freddy Hart and The Heartbeats when he performed in Wilmington, DE. I've spent a few nights in Vineland NJ at a place that used to be called "Eugene's" and once new a singer up in Elmer, NJ named Rick Marone. |

I played Cheryls a couple times. It was actually in two different locations on the same corner in New Castle.
A few years back there were a lot of places to play in that area including The Triple Nickel, The Keg (now Just Muggs), The Bierhof, and not too far away was Hurleys in Marcus Hook.
Cheryls used to get a couple of then unknowns like Alan Jackson and Tim McGraw playing with Kenny Jones' bands. |

Hi Jack, I don't know but next time I see Kenny I'll ask him.
Muggs/the Keg still has country music but Wayne T is the only steel player that ever plays there anymore.
The other bands are all southern rock or one lead guitar all night. |

Bo and Jack thanks for the info and response. Cheryl was a great fan of country music. My last time there was I guess in '87. Don D. |

Hey Frank, you spoke of the following:
Quote: |
"Eugene's" and once new a singer up in Elmer, NJ named Rick Marone. |
I worked a Delaware club, with Rick Marone during a huge snow storm. After none of the other three showed up, the folks wanted to hear music anyway, and the owner asked if we could play two piece.
A first time ever of playing a club two piece. Rick, (singing and base) and myself on pedal steel. Turned out to be a great time. Rick, was a flat out excellent base player, as well as, not a bad singer. But, he sure did come on strong in stepping up to the plate that night, never before or since, have I ever heard a bass player do such a great job.
His brother Frank Marone owned a music store he ran out of his basement. Frank had a career as a professional Jazz guitar player, and a teacher of Jazz guitar.
Just thought I'd pass that info on to you. And Eugene's, I guess everyone knew of that place, although for a long time, they had only rock groups.
The "Wayside Inn" was pretty cool. The bandstand was located on the inside of the bar that wrapped completely around it. Bo probably remembers that.
And, Southern New Jersey, at one time, probably had more places to play country, than many other areas did. Players were coming out of all other areas to get in on the action.
Welcome back into the music scene.
PS: Is Dave Linkus still around?
All good ones,
Don |

Hi Don... didn't know Dave, sorry. Yeah, lots of old memories from those days of past. Sounds like you had a great time with Rick. Never knew what every happened to him. Last I saw him was about 1978ish. Glad to be back in the music biz again. Thanks for the reply... keep pickin'. |
