Here's a couple of pics of my hand made lap steels.

For more photos go here http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/r0g3rp1/LapSteels?feat=directlink

They were done as sort of apprentice pieces so I could work out how to make them, what tools to use etc.

I am currently working on a FryPan style 6 stringer made from European Ash which I may sell

Those are nice looking steels, Roger. What pickups are you using? Keep it up!

Thanks everyone I appreciate the replies.

The top one has a couple of cheap strat pickups I got off ebay but they sound pretty good. The second one has a Tonerider P90 which sounds good also but I need to mess about with different capacitors for the tone control.

They are both made from Cedar of Lebanon, which isn't an ideal wood for guitar making (its a bit soft and dents easily)....sounds Ok though!

The top one has a mahogany fretboard with grooves for frets, the second one has inlaid rosewood for the frets with abalone dots. The "Rog" logo is inlaid copper.

Both are finished with with 10-15 coats of Finishing oil which is some sort of Tung oil mixture

Thanks Tom, I might one day get up to your quality!

I noticed that on one of your steels you used aluminum for your frets, did you cut it yourself or did you buy it in thin strips?

I've done two with the aluminum frets and have a third I'm working on now.
Its kind of a pain, but I cut the strips myself out of some sheet stock. I true up one edge on the jointer with the aluminum sandwiched between a couple pieces of sacrificial pine, band saw off a strip, re-true the edge, rinse and repete as necessary.
If I used more of it I'd just have a sheet metal shop shear me up a bunch.

Nice job Roger. Attached is a 7 string frypan that I made. I used oak - aluminum top and bottom plate - pick-up made by Elva West - aluminum bridge - strings through body - used pop rivets to cover holes in top plate.
