We've discussed fanned frets before, as fitting better the anatomy of the arm, now how about the position of the strings ?
The strings on a Console Steel or Pedal Steel Guitar are parallel to the ground, but isn't this a result of the manufacturing design process rather than comfort ? Your hands naturally droop down in a relaxed posture. To hold the tone bar parallel to the ground requires the muscles to lift up slightly. Would the position of the tone bar be more comfortable if the plane of the strings were to tilt away from you ?
With an acoustic steel guitar, such as a Dobro or Weissenborn, you can hold the instrument in whatever position you feel is comfortable. Maybe someone should make a study of how people hold such instruments. Maybe they would be easier to play if they were on a stand, in the same position as a pedal steel.
Any suggestions ? |

It can be seen in the JERRY BYRD video's on YouTube, that Jerry tilted his double neck Sho-Bud forward, away from his person, at an alarming angle.
As a young musician, I used to tilt my Fender T-8 toward me and that worked well.....in my early years.
Now at my age of 72.5, it seems the whole world is somewhat tilted, one way or another? |

I have always tilted my Kline forward. Long legs, but I also find it more comfortable. And,,, nothin' falls off the shelf! |

This extreme tilt back toward me seems the most comfortable to me. |
