I have been out of work since June so it looks like time to sell 3 of my lap steels and misc. I know a lot of people are holding tight to their cash now so I have a general question on whether you think that vintage steel guitars are getting a fair price on ebay now?

Are you talking fair to the buyer or fair to the seller? Some of the ridiculous pricing seems to have died down, with more reasonable minimum bids and sales.

A good eBay auction, with well photographed items, clear descriptions, and a lower minimum bid will always bring in higher prices than trying to sell something outright at a high Buy It Now price. (Hint: if you want to sell it, use craigslist. If you want to auction it, use eBay.)

In watching the lap steels I'm interested in, it seems to me prices have come down by as much as 30% in the last six months and even so things are not selling as quickly.

I agree with Brad. Good pictures (lots of 'em), honest descriptions (including issues), and information will always help fetch a better price for your gear.

As a potential buyer, there is nothing more frustrating than finding a steel you like, but having little to no info or pics to bid on.

Also, having time on your side helps. I recently sold a guitar on craigslist, but it took over 2 months. However, I sold it at the price I wanted.

Times like these make it tricky, but I wish you luck Gary.

Thank you for the timely reminder. Try selling them here to one of our friendly readers; you might get a better price and less hassle.

(Just be sure to put your ads in For Sale: Instruments and not Steel Without Pedals, otherwise I'll have to move them.)
