Last night on Austin city Limits they had a band called Calexico I was wondering who the steel player was.He looked a little like my old next door neighbor Danny Hawk, but it's been many years since I've seen him. _________________ Steeltronics Z-pickup,Desert Rose S-10 4+5,Desert Rose Keyless S-10 3+5... I don't know who it is, but I heard an album of their's recently and the steel playing was very cool. Nice phrasing in just the right spots.
It's great to hear steel guitar in the context of their songs. Special stuff. |

Calexico's use of tasty pedal steel is one of the main reasons I got into playing. Not long after buying my first steel, I had the chance to see them live. I got to the venue early enough to get a spot right in front of Paul, and I watched his every move! I might have creeped him out even, as it might be a little weird to have a tall bearded guy in the front row looking between your legs all night! (Um, watching the knee levers.)
Great band all around, indeed. So much taste. My ladyfriend said the drummer plays like Batman! And that is a GOOD thing. |

Thanks,I enjoyed them very much,Good stuff,I like Paul's approach on pedal steel,It's about the song...John Graboff has that gift also, very unique player who doesn't sound like everyone else.I tend to go for the creative type players who aren't trying to be clones. _________________ Steeltronics Z-pickup,Desert Rose S-10 4+5,Desert Rose Keyless S-10 3+5... I think Calexico makes a kind of music that is timeless. It's desert atmosferic music. A dreamband to play in!
If they ever are in need of a steeler, Paul, think of me

My favorite is 'Feast of Wire', and 'Garden Ruin' is quite good, however it's more singer-songwriter fare. |
