all I can say is "whoa".. some KILLER steel all over that album, world class between cut doodling, flawless execution in a style that hit me as a supercharged very modern Ralph Mooney thing.. The old style was there, but the steel sound was new and innovative and whoever was playing is extremely inventive and proficient with some serious traditional "grounding".. Who is the wonderful player on this great album?? bob

Bob, Hank Williams Jr. thought so, too! That's where Cowboy spent a major portion of his time when Hank was touring and recording. You're right...killer player.

"Cowboy" Eddie Long played on Kenny Chesney's first album after he'd played steel with Hank Jr. "Cowboy" was Kenny's steel player for five years before Jim Bob Gairrett joined Kenny's band. "Cowboy" Eddie Long now tours as Jamey Johnson's road steeler and plays a BMI steel.

As usual, Brett has all the pertinent info down to a science!.. yeah man, This guy is super.. Jamey lets him SHINE!!!!!.. I never even noticed much steel on Chesneys stuff, But Jamey lets the steel sing out and his music is all the better for it...
"Somewhere between Jennings and Jones"" indeed.. bob

Bob,
Cowboy will be in Mt. Vernon Ill. this year April 16th, 17th and 18th on the big stage. You are absolutely right about Cowboy. He is an awesome player and fantastic guy.

If you like Julian Tharpe, you will love Cowboy's playing. What many don't know is Cowboy was a student of Julian for nearly 5 years.

If you want to get him going sometime and you have the chance to be around him, ask him to play some of the Julian's licks, he will blow you away,

I caught the show last night -I knew he was somebody really seasoned but didn't know til now who he was! great steeler. Looked like here was playing a BMI keyless S-12? Too bad the scene was a zoo I would have liked to have met him.

Cowboy Eddie also played some great steel on those old Confederate Railroad songs.

I posted my attempt at his intro & outtro to "High Cost of Living" over in "Tablature."

I dunno, Bob. Think mebbe this Jamey guy is holding back somewhat? Sad Smile Very Happy?? Ah, UMMMM...hope his plans are to ratchet-up and 'smoke them tarrs' before Gnashville finds a way to screw him over. Mad

Seriously... tasty steel to juice-up a great mix. The sound of paying dues and dues paid.

Just to throw you all a curve ball, Jamey Johnson wrote "honky tonk badonk a donk".
kinda funny that a guy who plays such traditional REAL country wrote one of the least trad POP country songs ever to hit the charts!
jamey's guitar player jason cope is a great dude and a steel guitar player as well.
