Doug, that was just great, and that Guyatone sounds wonderful. Can you post your B11 tuning? I like to use F# A B (or C#) D# F# A C# E.

Well crap, I can't get my Guya to sound like that.

Doug, would you consider swapping guitars so you can train mine to sound like that? Smile

Actually, I tune mine to get more of a country sound out of it. I never could get that sweet Hawaiian sound like you have done.

Thanks guys. I'm still trying to get used to the sound of this Guyatone. It seems to 'break up' a bit more than other non-pedal steels I've played. Sometimes that can be a Good thing. Winking thanks again for the positive comments. Smile

Les, a big part of the sound is in the B11 tuning with it's big, rich 9th chords and 7th chords. It works great for songs like "How D'ya Do" which has 7th chords throughout most of it, and "Sand" with it's crashing 9th chords. Wink Cool

that's a much superior sound to much i've heard on here. must be a good steel, however i think it may largely be due to your playing, doug! very clear, in tune and confident.

Thanks Chris, Ray, and others. I'm really enjoying recording these tunes, and I especially like the B11 tuning. Like all lap steel tunings it has it's limitations, but for songs with lots of 7ths and 9ths it can't be beat. thanks again. Smile

Doug, I play this tune on a Fender Dual Pro. (through a Nash. 112) and with the same tuning. I like the way you have designed (arranged) that part of the tune in the upper register __ fits the chord prog. well.

With the trap pickups it took a lot of work for me to be able to play, that far up the scale, smoothly __ the way the traps are designed. It's difficult to get my right hand in the right position. And, I play one backward slant on frets 21 and 20.

I also play it on a 26" triple Stringmaster (much easier); but I like the sound of the Dual Pro. better for Hawaiian.

..great job Doug.

Thanks Rick, the arrangement, the sections, are from Jerry Byrd's version of this tune. Same tempo and arrangement, the high improv part, etc. I could never reproduce what he played, but I humbly tried to copy his style somewhat. As Dirty Harry said "a man's got to know his limitations"! Laughing

Regarding the trapaziod PUs... they don't work for me. They make right hand Blocking very difficult, if not impossible IMHO.

Thanks Jerry, sorry to say... I've only been playing B11 for a few months, less than a year. But I've been playing steel guitar since 1970, 6 or 7 nights a week for many years, and I still play a few gigs a month.
Switching between tunings is fairly easy once you're able to recognize the common intervals in the various tunings, the 3rds, 6ths, the harmonized scales, where the chords are, majors, minors, etc. And the techniques, blocking, vibrato, harmonics, etc. work on all tunings. Winking

Really Nice, Doug. You have great touch on the instrument regardless of tuning. I recognized the JB arrangement.

Doug,

If Jerry heard you playing that song, he would come up and attempt to cut your strings. His way of complementing you.

You did a great job on the number. Lots of good feel and good picking.

It is a favorite of mine and I do it in some of the Hawaiian steel guitar conventions because it always attracts interest.

Aloha, Smile

I would leave off the two bottom strings. I didn’t play those two strings at all in my recording of the tune. So a 6-string version would look like this.

1. E
2. C#
3. A
4. F#
5. D#
6. C#

Notice that there is no B in this 6-string B11 tuning! That’s okay though. It still works.

I've never seen tablature for How D'ya Do, but according to a recent post here on the Forum, the Jerry Byrd big course has tab for this song. The secret is in the tuning. Once you tune to B11 the patterns lay out fairly easy, in my opinion. I was able to find the melodies and harmonies for this tune and for "Sand" by ear, once I had the right tuning on my guitar.
