Before joining Connie Smith's band, Gary had played steel with a number of artists. Around 1996, he was playing steel for Faith Hill and had been her steel player for quite a while. In 2003, Russ Hicks was playin' steel behind Connie and for awhile, Johnny Cox had played for her too.

I belive Gary Carter played for Lorrie Morgan in the early to mid 80's, and before that, with Lacy J. Dalton. If I'm mistaken, someone please correct me.
