What is the difference between the Bill Lawrence 705's with the chrome around it and the newer ones with the black around it? My old Sho~Bud Baldwin Crossover has one with the chrome around it and it has a fat sound but it may be the guitar. _________________ "Hotrod"

I believe you mean 705. The 710 has twenty individual pole pieces and a full (black) cover, not just a collar around it, like the 705, which has twin blades. |

Austin there is another thread discussing these pickups ...the original 705's with the chrome casing were made by Bill Lawrence !!
The newer ones are not made by Bill Lawrence, but rather some other guy - who somehow manages to use the Lawrence name I believe !
I had the original ones on my Bud Super Pro and they were an excellent pickup --- don't know about the newer ones, but I have heard conflicting reports on how they compare! _________________ 14'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9

Austin,
I have original 705's in my EMCI. They can sound full and warm, but also clear and bright, a lot depending on EQ. I find them to be cleaner and brighter than the George L's that used to be in the guitar, but still not as fat sounding as my Emmons single coils. The old 705's sound good and well balanced and versatile, certainly not dull sounding. Don't know about the current "Bill Lawrence" 705......it would be interesting to hear what the real Bill Lawrence thinks about they way they sound. |
