How many of YOU....employ a cover for your guitar case?

We used to get covers with brand new amp purchases; then that ceased and you had to order them for an outlandish sum of money.

Guitar cases were usually left to face the ravages of time and transport and over the years, I've seen some real historical cases.

Does ANYONE make quality covers for Emmons, Sho-Bud and all other types of guitar cases? How much do they average for a double-10 g'tar?

My Bigsby case has held up remarkably well for over 50 years but some of the Rick cases are pretty torn up.

My 1958 Gibson Super 400 came in its brown-covered case with the pink lining, but it also had a kind of brown canvas cover that did a great job of keeping the case perfect and blemish-free.

I'm not sure if it was an optional extra. I bought the guitar new because the original buyer had opted out of the deal - maybe he ordered the cover. In any event, the guitar cost me a small fortune back then - at least the price of a small family car. My dad went nuts when he saw what I was committing to!!!

Not a steel, I know, but it jogged my memory. Those old Gibson cases were a work or art; it was a good idea to protect them.

Roger, your account of the purchase of the Gibson 400 brings back a memory of one that got away. While employed as a driver-roadie for the George Thorough and the Del. Destroyers group I had a chance to purchase a super 400 and a vintage Fender twin rev for 1000 bucks. At the time I was starting to grasp the whole Jazz Swing deal on guitar and just by chance I see this guitar in a music store window in Hannibal Mo. I went in there and asked to about the axe in the window and the store owner gets it out for me tells me the owner from down state bought in the early sixties and pretty much only played G C and D on it. He was selling it on consignment and the seller would probably take 800.00 for the whole package! It was my first week on the job and I let it slide. I knew it was worth more but had no idea how much more. A day later I realized maybe I should go ahead and get and called the store about the purchase. The store owner replied "You know the strangest thing happened today a guy ,a local lawyer, who didn't play guitar came in this morning and bought both the guitar and amp. He happened to be the promoter of the show and heard me tell the story. Oh well live and learn or die stupid. I have often wondered why the store owner; it was a mom and pop type of business, did not know the true value, which at the time was aroung ten grand. Yeesh. Don D.

My wife makes case covers for any instrument that I travel with. At a cost of $250.00 plus for a steel guitar case, a few yards of material is a small investment indeed. I have cases that are years old that still appear new. (A while back I e-mailed "D2F" covers with the idea of producing them since my wife does not have time to make them on a large scale, but heard nothing back.)
