How many of you play out week ends a the American Legions and VFW Post. The New England Steel Guitar Association plays out once a month at the American Legion Post 15 in East Greenwich,Rhode Island. WE have a crowd of 80 to 125 people every month and we suport the American Legion Post. They are our Charitable Organization and this Sunday we have a big donation for them. There is also a band that plays there every Saturday night and the place is always a packed house. The Saturday night band is the Hayloft Jamboree. It use to be Eddie Zack & Cousin Richie and the Hay Loft Jamboree but both Eddie and Richie passed away a few years ago and the two sisters now in their 80s are keeping the band going.

We do , we have several of the seasonal holiday gigs already booked for 2009, these are always fun and the folks are very easy to please and are very responsive. I also think they may start drinking an hour before we start playing though Exclamation

Folks let me give you an alternative where country steel guitar is well received. THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION HOSPITALS ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY. You'll never meet a more appreciable audience. And they deserve the attention.

Hey Thanks Guys it is great to hear you all support the American Vets. I'm a Vet and proud of it. I would do it all over again at 72.I'm a member of the American Legion and all the people enjoy the good old Country Classic music. We have a Steel Guitar Mini Jamboree this Sunday and we are going to get a little snow and change to rain. We will be there no matter what. This is what it is all about.

My band play a few times a year at the American Legion in Denbeigh, Va. It's a cool lounge and pays $300 for four of us. What's nice is it's only from 7:30 to 10:30 PM on either a Friday or Saturday night. Also on occasion we play at the VFW in Oceanview (Norfolk), Va. It pays the same but it's a four hour gig from 8-12 but who cares, I'm not doing it for a living anymore........JH in Va.

I hate to be the spoiled sport, but I sometimes play one here in the Bay Area and it's the worst gig I play. I hate it. I used to be in this CLASSIC (and I mean old classic country) band that played there once a month. Now that I quit that band, a friend of mine does the gig. I play for him on occasion (have one coming in a few weeks) when he needs the night off to do other gigs.

I'm sure this is not the case at every American Legion hall, but this one usually has a maximum of 25 people for dinner. After they eat, half of them head for the door. Midway through the second (of 3) sets, you're usually down to 5 or 10 people. And it's actually a pretty good band.

I played them atleast once a week for 30 yrs. Most of the WW2 and Korea vets have died off or unable to dance(I am a Korea vet and I'm 80). The vfws in these parts are all rock joints, youth must have its day, so not much of an opportunity to play them anymore. cc

We only have three that are still going around here. One VFW in town and an American Legion and a VFW about 30 miles from here. The VFW on the Texas side of Texarkana has folded. The others have stopped the dances. Most of the bands are four piece guitar, bass, keyboard and drums.

Living in the southern tip of TX, our winters are very mild - it was in the low 90's today - but a cool temp, not as hot as it sounds. As our southern members know, particularly those in FL, TX & AZ, the winter population swells with winter tourists.

American Legions & VFWs are very busy here in the winter, from Nov-March. They have all kinds of raffles, meat auctions, and various suppers. Most tourists are living in an RV, so this gives them an opportunity to stretch their legs, have a good time, get a good deal on food and hopefully listen and dance to some good country music. And that's the good thing about these places, they want to hear country music.

If you're a country musician, you stay very busy during the winter season, and you've certainly played these places. I know several guys playing many times a week - make hay when the sun shines. The summer is very slow.

I play in an AL Mon 6-9 & Weds 5-8, I like the early hours. And in another on the 1st Fri of the month from 7-11. And of course there are numerous parks that have activity centers, and those have music as well during the week. Those are even better, country music is in demand and there's no smoking. Early hours too.

It's not Broadway, but it ain't all that bad.

There was a band I was in back the early 80's and we got booked to play at this VFW hall in St. Amant, La.
We got ion ther to set up and noticed across the bandstand was a railing, And stupid me asked the guy at the hall if the railing was for the chicken wire. Wellllllll! that went over like Anna Nicole Smith getting deflated. It turned out the railing around the bandstand was to hang the banner for the bingo games that were held there on Sunday afternoon. But it is good to play at the VFW. Because the people deserve it. I look at as my way to give back to those that have given so much. Very Happy

Initials and animals are the way to go (Moose, eagles etc). Bars are closing down daily and if you don't make them money they never have you back. The clubs have the money allocated in advance and aren't too concerned about turnouts. They appreciate the steel better than most of the bars filled with youngsters. I play initials and animals regularly and glad to do it!
