One of the latest incarnations of the Boss Tone has had to change its name under threat of action by the Boss company.
However, I am not fully convinced that the Boss compact pedals were around before the original Boss Tone came out. Can this be morally right to squeeze out a product that has the word Boss in its title that had no original affiliation with the Japanese company? _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. The Jordan Boss-Tone came out about a decade before Roland had any "Boss" line pedals or products. But Jordan doesn't really exist today, and Roland/Boss is huge. Lawyers, lawyers, lawyers.

Even worse Ralph Lauren sued the U.S. Polo Assoc. a couple years ago. The had a magazine for members that had been published for many years. He felt that he owned the name Polo. The had to put a disclaimer on the front page "not associated with RL, Polo, etc". He actually thought he owned the noun! |

Ken...I got, and still use the original Bosstone I got off Eric Snowball's steel Mill way back in about 1971. I recall the first "Roland" Boss pedal, was one Eric got in...a Chorus pedal, in a brownish Crackle finish with the old type button foot switch. That was much later. I too beleive that the Bosstone was out first.

the first boss pedal was indeed the chorus ensemble.
the worst is Monster Cables who attempt to sue anyone using the name monster for any product whatsoever. I will never buy anything made by them.
I was also sad when the WWF had to change its name to WWF...stupid panda bears! |
