What does the "MOD" do? How much is it? What if I don't get the upgrade, will it eventually hurt the amp?
Thanks, Tommy |

Tommy, I just happened to speak with Mike Brown at Peavey today about that very subject. He said if you send the amp to Peavey the cost would be $50 in parts and $50 in labor for a total of $100. I assume you would have to add S/H to that.
Hope that helps.

Don't know about the Peavey Mod, but Ken Fox's mod is great. It's between 200 and 300 bucks. I have 2 NV 400's. One with the Fox mod, and one without. It's like night and day. The un-modded 400 has that typical dry sterile solid state sound that we all know and love (seriously). The mod takes that dryness and stirility out and almost makes it sound like a tube amp without the overdrive problems if you turn it up loud. Tube lovers, no offense to be taken in that statement as I love the sound of a nice overdriven tube amp, on guitar or a steeler playing mostly rock and blues. Much more control of the midrange. Reverb really sparkles. |

Hope this will help with the understanding of the mod I do:
The "Intense mod" is 235.00 and return shipping.
The mod is three stage, the reverb mod, the tone mod and filter caps replacement.
The audio coupling caps are replaced with tantalum electrolytic caps. These are a very expensive cap compared to the original electrolytic caps in the original amp. The tantalum caps have a warm tone and less mid range honk. They have a smooth top end tone as well. The tone caps are replaced with Sprague Orange Drop caps. The audio opamps are replaced with Bur Brown OP2604AP caps.
The reverb mod adds a very definite sparkle. They only exception I have found is with some of the older 3 springs tank that suffered infestation of rotted foam rubber from the piece inside the tank, place above the springs. Often the tanks cannot be cleaned up. Did one yesterday and replace the tank with a new one and it really came to life! I keep the replacement 3 springs tanks on hand at all times.
The main power filters caps (6 total) are all replaced as well and several other filters in other areas of the amp.
All together some 38 parts are replaced. All jacks are checked and cleaned. I also test and clean pots as needed. Reverb harness connections are cleaned and re-tensioned. A special type of anti corrosive is applied to the connections
Finally the amp is reassembled and load tested with a scope and 1000hz tone on a 400 watt load bank. After that it is tested on a shop speaker. |

Tommy, these mods are improvements, but it won't hurt your amp to remain stock. |

The Ken Fox Mod's are really great. I have one already Modded amd my second one is being shipped back to me now. Another thing I like about having Ken Mod them is he really does good work and the service is quick. Also with the bright switch pulled out it really works great with Telecaster's. I highly recomend the Fox Mod's. J.Dean |
