Steel player front-and-center on the COB show.
On the second clip, the band shows dynamic sensitivity and doesn't overwhelm the acoustic cats. I'm sure we all know country electric guys we wish would show that kind of restraint. |

The Lee Boys were one of the highlights of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco a few years back. They played on the smallest stage, early in the day. I was one of three people standing there when they started, but when the first song people started streaming towards the stage like someone had set fire to it! By the time their set was finished, the whole area was stuffed full of people dancing.
Thanks for sharing these clips! _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Love the Lee Boys, love Sacred Steel music. Very happy to see some support for it here, and thanks for the great clips. the stuff with them and Del's band is really cool, and you are right about the sensitivity they show to the acoustic players. Wonderful music. |

They were here in Kingsport about 2 years ago and put on a great show, everybody loved them. I talked to Roosevelt and guitar player and they were very friendly.

The Lee Boys are great musicians and great guys. One of the hardest working bands out there now. Roosevelt is such a killer steel (and dobro) player and the most unassuming guy you will ever meet (except maybe Bobby Black). |

Cool. It is great to see a pedal steel front-and-center on the mainstream late-night shows.
I also like to see cross-genre gigs like the second link. All styles of music have something to offer other stylists if they just listen for it. My opinion, anyway. |

Thanks for posting the clip. I like the sound and the approach.
Quick question. I hear these Sacred Steelers using either an envelope filter or Wah Wah, my guess being the latter. If it is the latter, do they use a separate Wah Wah pedal alongside their volume pedal, or a combination Wah Wah/Volume pedal?
Thanks!!

It seems like it's just a wah pedal based on what I'm hearing.
Darick Campbell of the Campbell Brothers uses a wah pedal in his excellent instructional video on Homespun. He also frequently adjusts his sound using the volume and tone controls on his lap steel.
I don't know specifically which brand of wah pedal Roosevelt Collier uses. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Yes, Many SS players use a Wah pedal to either achieve enhanced tonal coloration or to help get that rockish wah wah sound.

|
Some SS players (especially pedal steelers due to the lack of volume controls on most brands) use the two pedal side by side approach. Since wah pedals usually work on and amplify the current volume of the instrument, if the volume pedal is placed before the wah in the signal chain, the player could back off the volume to keep the wah from being overbearing to the ear.
When I played on Velt's fessy a few months ago, he was using a volume pedal and a dunlop cry baby for the wah.
There was something special I saw in the second clip. Good music brings musicians together in brotherhood regardless of religion, race, cultural upbringing, party lines, class or whatever else the world makes up for us. Even if for just a split second... |
