While I'm waiting for my buddy to ship the Carter Starter Pedal Steel, I need to order the right instructional DVD's to get started. Where's a good place to start?
Thanks |

Check Out the instruction area of the forum here.
Scotty's music offers some and Jeffran Music is a good source as well. _________________ A couple of guitars

I checked out the Instruction section here and there's a bunch. So what would be the best starter out of what's offered? |

Start with Bruce Bouton's Learn to Play, available pretty much anywhere. Then go into a little more detail with Right Hand Alpha and other Newman courses. |

Thanks guys, It really helps to know what works the best. When I got started on the Squareneck Dobro, I bought The Jerry Douglas Instructional DVD's thinking learning from the master would be the best. I''m not saying I didn't learn from Jerry, but there are other instructional material that taught me more and are better for new players. Jimmy Heffernan, Cindy Cashdollar and Rob Ickes were really good. |

Mickey Adams and Joseph Barcus have some really good instructional videos on You Tube. Also, John Davis has a couple of basic e9th videos on You Tube to help beginners. I understand that Mickey Adams is nearing completion of an instructional book with video that you might be interested in.

Hey Dennis, if you can find one, I recommend Doug Jernigan's Beginner E9 course. Also, Steve Palousek had a good E9 Beginner's course. Both of these were on vhs and deal with picks, tuning, grips, pedals etc. Doug's course had a booklet with tab.
Good luck to you. |

I thought Bruce Boutons dvd was great for someone just starting. It covers alot of basics and its not expensive.
This topic always gets alot of different answers. I guess we've all had different experiences and what worked best for one person might not have worked so well for another.
best of luck and enjoy. |

When I first started I dropped a LOT of money on instructional materials. The things that helped me the most were:
Winnie Winston book - A little outdated, but FULL of good information. Try to learn everything in there! I still haven't, but I hope to!
Lloyd Maines videos - no need for TAB (although it is included). Particularly helpful was the 60 licks in 60 minutes video. I took each lick and analyzed why it sounded like it did (i.e. he's bending the 9 to the maj 3rd, etc) and learned them in every key.
Also, the Bruce Bouton video helped a lot with the nuts and bolts.
But really, even if you only learn one or two things from a book or video it is still worth the price. And who knows, if you come back to it in a year you may be ready for the material. |
