I interviewed Tom in 1996 in Branson. Since I was a complete stranger he was justifiably suspicious of me but warmed up when I asked him why he tuned down a half tone when he first played with Buck. He actually invited me back for a second interview after which he was worried that he had been too controversial. As a result I never published the interview...I still have the tape someplace. Dave:
Its not that big a deal. Tom said that for a brief time(one year) he had moved to Nashville to do session work;he was surprised that he wasn't offered as much work as he thought he would get and was disappointed. He certainly had a right to be considering he played what is probably one of the most well known solos in the history of steel guitar.
When I went to Branson in 1996 I had little money. I went to his family show at 11:00 the first day and paid but I found myself returning on each subsequent day(To Listen in the lobby) because the music sounded so good. About the third day Tom told the ticket taker to let me in anytime I wanted....I still treasure how classy that was of him...Peter |

Sounds like a good man, to me. It's sad that a lot of the Masters of the steel are gone. Some of the people(i.e.)Mr, Tom, were guys I listened to when I was younger. We miss you Tom ! |

Thanks for posting the link to that interview. Tom was speaking very candidly it seems. I notice that he gets more animated when he's speaking about certain topics, such as Jerry Byrd. Some of my favourite Brumley playing, and tone, is on "Close up the honky tonks", but he didn't seem to like his sound on that at all...Jerry |
