Howdy! On the original release of Waltz Across Texas with Ernest Tubb singing, who is Buddy the steel guitar player AND what steel guitar and copedent did he use at that time? I gather Buddy is Buddy Charleton; however, I am not sure. Your info appreciated! Thanks! _________________ Always, Gene Rector |

I knew Buddy way back when, and his guitar was pretty standard Emmons set up. No fancy gimmick's. Last I heard hes was teaching at Billy Cooper's in Orange Va. You might ask him. I'm sure he would know.

Charleton cut that in early '65, so I'm going to guess he was playing a D10 Sho~Bud fingertip model. The tuning quite likely would have been the standard E9th (A,B,& C pedals), with one lever lowering the E's.
The E9th was pretty simple for most pro players back in those days. Most of the experimenting and complex setups were found on the C6th neck. |

The playing and the steel tone on that song are as good as it gets; JUST the way a steel should sound, IMO. Both the intro and the solo are awesome, incredibly tasteful. One of my all-time favorites, despite ET's slightly off-pitch singing style. |

The "Ernest Tubb Record Shop" has DVD's available of TV shows that ET did in the '60's. You can hear as well as SEE Buddy Charleton (and his Sho-Bud) playing the Ernest Tubb standards as well as those incredible instrumental duets he performed with Leon Rhodes. |

David Nugent is right on. You should order those old television shows of Ernest and the TX Troubadors. You can see and hear them play and the quality is excellent. Buddy Charleton (Sho-Bud Steel), Leon Rhodes and some has Steve Chapman playing guitar too. All worth the cost of a few dollars.
Besides you also can see and hear other featured band members like a young Jack Green, Cal Smith and guest singers and players people like young Willie Nelson, Wade Ray, and others.
The DVDs are just super!
GOD bless!
