I bought one of these back in my guitar days. Been trying to use it in my current pedal steel setup, but I've noticed it takes out some of the 'bite'.

What's the deal, I don't understand smaller electronics very well.

25k is way too low a value for a steel guitar pickup. It'll kill all the highs by loading down the pickup. That's why we use 500k pots. If you put a buffer of some sort before that pedal, youre highs will be restored, and it should work fine.

That's what I was suspecting... I know that steels have high outputs and figured 25k must not be very high.

It might work in the effects loop of your amp, Clinton.

Bobbby makes a great point.

But on another note, if this VP is for pedal steel, you really may want to consider a pedal steel volume pedal that's tapered and designed for sitting at a steel. The Ernie Ball pedals are great, but the angle and throw are really not ideal for sitting at a pedal steel guitar. They're better for a standing guitarist.

And if you use the buffer, the 25K VP will have more highs that a 250K VP after a buffer.

This is because the parasitic capacitance of the output cable is in parallel with the VP resistance, forming a rolloff of highs. For example 250K pot and 200 pf of cable capacitance is a -3 dB frequency of 3.2 kHz. This is different and unrelated to loss of highs when loading down the pickup as Brad mentions.

Only possible problem with 25K is if the buffer has a low enough value output cap to cause a rolloff of the bass.

I personally use a 50K pot in my passive VP.

You could probably pick up a used Goodrich for less than that. Or a new Fender Volume/Tone is also less money.

It's probably a 250k (I don't believe they ever made a 25k). This may affect your highs and your volume as well. (A 500k pedal is certainly better in this respect.) Also, your cords need to be of good quality, and as short as possible. If they're not, this will also affect your tone and your volume. The George-L's seem to be about the best available.
