The other day I squoze my JBL K110 into my early '70s Fender Champ. The hole was already cut for a 10", but the chassis and speaker was a tight fit. I had to move the main cap and also the output transformer (a new OT that handles 8 ohms). Played a gig last night, and unmiked, this little 5 watt screamer filled a room of 50 people and kept up with a drum kit, bass amp, amplified acoustic guitar, and vocals. The efficiency of the JBL sure makes those 5 watts sound more like 15. And it played pretty darn clean, but right on that edge of sweet breakup.

Way to go! You bet a JBL will make her louder. Do the same with my 1965 Deluxe and can keep up with a Twin with standard speakers in it.

A more efficient speaker is so much cheaper than more wattage!!

The JBL does not help my tone. A Jensen or other low powered speaker sounds far better to my ear. The JBL just gives me a lot more volume.

I am not a JBL fan, even though I use one. If I had to do it again I would have put in a EVM12L speaker, much warmer than a JBL in my experience.

The JBL tone is not for everyone, especially for 6-string guitar. Personally, I love it. They have an amazingly clean and clear sound, even when you overdrive an amp pretty hard. I think there's something about that large voice coil and the metal dust cap and how it rings like a bell. Probably the fact that the cap is metal is why it's got so much clarity, almost like a crude version of a tweeter. Even when run warm and mellow, the clarity is astounding. They're weird like that. They just don't haze over and smear like a typical "guitar" speaker. I love that sound too, like an old Alnico Jensen or vintage greenback Celestion or similar. That warm and creamy sound is also great, but very different from the JBL's focused and defined bell tone.

Also, the efficiency thing is really amazing with the JBL's. My 68' Deluxe Reverb with a D120 can hold up on any stage at pretty much any loudness level. My 12 watt '68 Princeton Reverb with the K110 is even too loud in some bars. Ken's right, it's cheaper (and lighter) to increase your amp's loudness with JBL speaker efficiency than with a stronger power amp section. This little 5 watt Champ with the JBL really did surprise me at how loud and clean it ran. It easily sounded louder than the 12 watt Princeton loaded with a normal speaker.

Yeah Ken, the EVM 12L is a great alternative. MUCH warmer than the JBL in the top crispy range, and a different and more guitar-ish midrange voicing. Any Larry Carlton fans out there? I believe that's his speaker. Plenty clear but real smooth and more of a natural "guitar" sound. Heavy magnet but real efficient as well.

I'm a big fan of the EVM's too! Lots more beef in the bottom end, and also smoother on the top than a JBL.

I think the smaller voice coil in the EVM12L allows a deeper basket. I also like Celestion and other deep basket speaker very well. Wish Peavey stil l had the 1501-4 deep basket speaker available!!!

I like my little Deluxe with the JBL, I just have to watch the treble or dogs and cats will start to complain!!! Still, an EVM is just as Donny described. Kind of like a Jensen on steroids

FYI - around 1978 I learned from Paul Rivera that Larry Carlton was using JBLs in his Boogies but they would blow on a regular basis, so for that reason he went to EVM speakers.

Of course he sounded great through either one!
