I just finished recording this video clip of Jerry Byrd's "Slippery Elm". This one is a real blast just to play and even more fun if you try to dial in JB's tone (a difficult task!). The video took 8 minutes to record and about 3 hours of head scratching (make that 4)to get it to my computer, etc. Anyway, it is what it is--all in good fun and I hope you enjoy it.
It's a bummer--there are still glitches in the video--oh well.....

Mike:
I cain't thank YOU enough.......
I was NEVER quite able to figure out HOW Speedy did "Flippin' the Lid".......and thanks to you, that mystery has now and forever been solved.
I've encountered still another mental block at this moment and am having difficulty understanding WHY......YOU have an A# on the 4th string.
Without sitting down at my Bigsby at this very moment, I'm experiencing severe mental trauma and a high degree of stress.....trying to rationalize what you're saying about that 4th string.(?)
Normally that would be tuned to a "B".........and with the pedal on that neck, I'd drop it to "B flat".
Whoa!!!! I guess that's the same thing you're saying, correct? Oh well, I now see the light.
THANKS for a very enlightening and beneficial educational experience on your YouTube site. |

Jerry Byrd ...
C6 and C6/A7 ...
Soft touch ...
Reverse slant into a forward slant ...
Frypan ...
In the immortal words of Julie Andrews ...

Ray, it's my understanding that Speedy's Bigsby did raise only, so he tuned string 4 to A# and with the pedal raised it to B.
Anyway, thanks for the compliment. I know I have no business making a Jerry Byrd video, but it's just too much fun and is my little way of showing respect to one of the masters.
Thanks, Rick. Did I miss anything? _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Great job Mike!
You did that in what tuning? Each string plez!
Next time move your amp to one side so we can hear each and every pluck. Your body tends to block the greatness of your sound/tone.
Keep 'em coming! |

So, that's what "playing up a storm" means, huh?

Ray, I dialed down the treble significantly to try to capture Jerry's sound. It was brought to my attention that the acoustic open string sound is very audible through the camera's mic (I played it at a low volume after all). I guess it's kind of annoying, but recording with an amp in a room is really the only way I like to play.
Anyway, it's just a straight C6 - E C A G E C.
I started doing this to get the hang of making videos. It's obvious that there is a ton of work and investment to be done if one was to do it right. First, I'd probably start off with a digital video camera.... _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Geesh, I can see Jerry's face now if he'd heard that, tone wise.
Maybe it translated different in the studio, but that seems to be a very powerful PU with a focus on major headroom and the top end.
My Magnatone's PU is much like that, and I have the tone knob at 0 to get the creamy tones JB, and I, prefer, and it still cuts thru.
I'd love to see a complete/detailed review of that guitar and PU to see just what range it has, along with an amp selection at various settings.
No doubt it has something for everybody. |

I don't have a tone control on the guitar--instead, I roll back the volume to about 80%. This seems to give me what I like, although I do prefer a cutting sound. The pickups Rick makes are tops. If you like top end sparkle and nice bottom and balanced mids, and HIGH output, then it's perfect. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Mike...I think you're getting the hang of the video thing quite nicely and if it's only gonna get better...great. Thanks so much for the effort. Hearing the tune is one thing...being able to watch what you're doing brings it to another level. Cheers man, I'm likin' it. |

I know music is all about the sound, but I enjoy seeing you and other good steelers play. Really cool to see you play with such control & precision, yet still move fluidly & relaxed. I once heard a quote attributed to Rev. Gary Davis that went something like "Play the guitar, don't let the guitar play you." You definitely play that thing!
Thanks for sharing the clip.
